The 2018 Winter Olympics wrapped up with the closing ceremony Sunday night, and as the host of the 2022 Games in Beijing, China presented an eight-minute handover show that incorporated many high-tech elements.

2018年冬奥会闭幕式于2月25日晚举行。中国作为2022年北京冬奥会的主办国，在闭幕式上呈现了一场融合高科技元素的8分钟交接表演。

The show was directed by Zhang Yimou, a famous Chinese director who was also responsible for the eight-minute summer handover in Athens in 2004 as well as the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing in 2008 that received considerable international acclaim.

这场演出由中国著名导演张艺谋执导，此前他还执导了2004年雅典奥运会上的8分钟交接表演，以及2008年北京奥运会的开幕式和闭幕式，在国际上备受赞誉。

Unlike Athens which focused on displaying Chinese history with traditional elements like red lantern and jasmine, “Beijing 8 Minutes” emphasized the Chinese people’s sincere welcome to the world using modern technology.

在雅典奥运会上的演出主要以大红灯笼和茉莉花等传统元素展现中国历史，而《北京8分钟》着重以高科技手段展现中国人民对全世界的诚挚欢迎。

Performers danced with 24 intelligent robots – representing Beijing hosting the 24th Winter Olympics – as they showed scenes of sports such as skating and skiing.

舞台上，表演者和24个智能机器人共同演绎了滑冰、滑雪等运动项目，24则代表着将在北京举行的第24届冬奥会。

Leading the team were two dancers in costumes of panda puppets that are the world’s largest but the lightest at the same time, each weighing only about 10 kilograms. To guarantee minimal pressure on the two dancers, researchers had tried hundreds of different materials until ending up with a combination of aluminum alloy tube and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer strip.

领舞的是两名身穿熊猫木偶服装的表演者，这两套熊猫木偶服装是目前世界最大，同时也是最轻的，每只仅重约10公斤。为了使两名舞者的承重降到最低，研究人员测试了上百种材料，最终确定了用铝合金管材和碳纤维条相结合。

During the whole performance the dancers and robots both wore LED lights on them that are capable of enduring the cold weather at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium without the risks of breaking. The uniforms were also made with graphene to keep the dancers warm.

在整个演出过程中，舞蹈演员和机器人身上都佩戴着LED照明灯，这些可以经受住平昌奥运场馆的严寒，不会出故障。演出服也是采用石墨烯材料制成，可以为演员防寒保暖。

Images were projected to the icy floor while dancers skated across it, creating a sense of augmented reality. A number of moving monitors in the middle of the field were also controlled by artificial intelligence.

演出时，舞蹈演员滑行穿过投射在冰面上的图像，创造出增强现实的意境。体育场中央的几个移动大屏幕也是由人工智能控制的。

On July 31st, 2015, at the 128th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the bid to host the 24th Winter Olympic Games was awarded to Beijing, together with its suburban Yanqing District, and nearby Zhangjiakou City. This is the first time for China to hold the Winter Olympics, and the third time to host an Olympics following the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics. The 24th Winter Games will be held in 2022, from February 4th to 20th. Then, Beijing will be the first city in the world to stage both Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics.

The slogan is “Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow”. The three concepts are to run an athletes-centered games, to ensure sustainable development, and to host an economical games.

北京冬奥会口号是“纯洁的冰雪，激情的约会”，三大理念是“以运动员为中心、可持续发展、节俭办赛”。

Emblem

The emblem was unveiled on August 1, 2015. The emblem resembles the Chinese character “冬” which means “winter” in English. At the top of the character is a person snowboarding. On the left of the emblem is the name of the main host city. On the right is the year in which it will be held, 2022. The character has the same colors as the Olympic Rings, including red, yellow, green, black, and blue. They contrast finely with each other.

The 2022 Winter Games includes 102 minor competitions in 15 major events. It will last 17 days from February 4th to 20th. Ice sports will be held in five venues in downtown Beijing, while snow sports will be held in two venues in suburban Yanqing District and five venues in nearby Zhangjiakou City of Hebei Province. Additionally, there will be 13 non-competition venues to award medals and accommodate athletes.

2022冬奥会包括15个大项、102个小项的角逐，从2月4日持续到20日，共17天。冰上项目将在北京城区的5个场馆进行，雪上项目将在延庆区2个场馆和张家口市5个场馆进行。此外，还有13个非竞赛场馆用于颁奖和运动员住宿。

Preparatory Work

Of the twelve competition venues, six are exisiting and six will be newly built. Four competition venues have been inherited from the 2008 Summer Olympics: the National Aquatics Center, the Wukesong Sports Center, the National Indoor Stadium, and the Capital Indoor Stadium. Two will be transformed from the Genting Resort Secret Garden in Zhangjiakou: the Genting Snow Park A and the Genting Snow Park B. The other six will be newly constructed. The National Speed Skating Oval will be built in downtown Beijing. The National Alpine Ski Center and the National Sliding Center will be constructed in Yanqing. The Biathlon Center, the Nordic Center Cross Country Venue, and the Nordic Center Ski Jumping Venue will be built in Zhangjiakou.

The trains will run at a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h) and will take as little as 50 minutes or so to travel between the two host cities.

京张高铁将于2019年通车。列车最高时速为350公里/小时，在这两座主办城市之间行驶只需50分钟左右。
