The Little Prince
Once when I was six years old .I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.
magnificent
adj. 壮丽的; 伟大的; 华丽的；primeval
adj. 原始的; boa constrictor
n.大蟒蛇; 王蛇 swallow vt.& vi.吞，咽; 忍耐，忍受；
In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey（被掠食者, 牺牲者, 掠食） whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion（消化力, 领悟）."
这本书中写道：“这些蟒蛇把它们的猎获物不加咀嚼地囫囵吞下，尔后就不 能再动弹了；它们就在长长的六个月的睡眠中消化这些食物。”
prey n.被捕食的动物; 捕食（习性）; 受害者; 受骗者；
vi.捕食; （疾病等）使人慢慢衰弱；
digestion n.消化，领悟; 消化能力; 细菌分解;I pondered（沉思, 考虑） deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle（丛林, 生死关头）. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece（杰作, 名著） to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: "Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting anelephant.
But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
大人们劝我把这些画着开着肚皮的，或闭上肚皮的蟒蛇的图画放在一边，还 是把兴趣放在地理、历史、算术、语法上。就这样，在六岁的那年，我就放弃了当画家这一美好的职业。
I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
我的第一号、第二号作品的不成功，使我泄了气。这些 大人们，靠他们自己什么也弄不懂，还得老是不断地给他们作解释。这真叫孩子们腻味。
disheartened adj.沮丧的，灰心的；
v.使沮丧，使泄气;
tiresome adj. 令人生厌的; 无聊的；
So then I chose another profession（职业, 专业, 表白, 宣布）, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
后来，我只好选择了另外一个职业，我学会了开飞机，世界各地差不多都飞 到过。的确，地理学帮了我很大的忙。我一眼就能分辨出中国和亚里桑那。要是 夜里迷失了航向，这是很有用的。
In the course of （在...期间） this life I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have seen them intimately, close at hand. And that hasn‘t much improved my opinion of them.
这样，在我的生活中，我跟许多严肃的人有过很多的接触。我在大人们中间 生活过很长时间。我仔细地观察过他们，但这并没有使我对他们的看法有多大的 改变。
In the course of 在…期间，在…过程中
Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:"That is a hat."
当我遇到一个头脑看来稍微清楚的大人时，我就拿出一直保存着的我那第一 号作品来测试测试他。我想知道他是否真的有理解能力。可是，得到的回答总是： “这是顶帽子。”
clear-sighted adj.目明的，聪明的，精明的；Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests（原生林）, or stars. I would bring myself down （打倒, 击落, 打死, 降低）to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties（领带）. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible（有感觉的, 明智的, 有判断力的） man.
我就不和他谈巨蟒呀，原始森林呀，或者星星之类的事。我只 得迁就他们的水平，和他们谈些桥牌呀，高尔夫球呀，政治呀，领带呀这些。于是大人们就十分高兴能认识我这样一个通情达理的人。
