Dai Jiancheng, at the age of 61, has gone through his fair share of ordeals leading up to an exhibition of his photos at the National Art Museum of China late last year.

Held in November, the solo show, called “Black-and-White South Pole”, presented 18 of his photos capturing icebergs, penguins and the footprints of explorers selected from more than 10,000 of his photos.

Robert Pledge, president of Contact Press Images, said Dai’s black-and-white photographs enable viewers to enter his mysterious scenes unconsciously and appreciate his astonishing discoveries.

“His works are magnificent, of great momentum and of very strong visual impact,” said documentary photographer Wang Fuchun.

“The greatest temptation that ‘Black-and-White South Pole’ creates is that the ice and snow in the pictures are not the evidence of great scenery, but the clues to pursue the kingdom of poetry,” said photographer Li Shaobai.

Born in Nantong, Jiangsu, in 1954, Dai became interested in photography more than 40 years ago while serving as a publicity officer in the military.

He said he appreciated the 20-year hardship and training, which gave him courage and strength.

In 1992, he was moved to a civilian post in an infrastructure building company and worked there until he retired. Over the decades, he practiced photography, creating a unique style, publishing more than 100 photos and receiving accolades.

After retirement and with the newfound freedom to travel, he began exploring the country and beyond to further his love for photography.

In 2013, Dai went to the Sahara in southern Algeria for a 10-day trip.

“I drove more than 6,000 kilometers so that I could shoot some heart-rending moments,” he said. “But they didn’t turn out as good as I expected. At that moment, I made a seemingly crazy decision to go to the South Pole.”

His preparation for the South Pole trip included daily swimming sessions for seven months. He also read up on the southernmost point on Earth, including its geographic features and ecosystems, and researched how to take photos in the harsh environment.

In November 2013, after seven months of preparations, he set out for the South Pole with 78 others, mostly photographers.

When the ship entered the Drake Passage, the body of water between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, the weather turned for the worse, engulfing the ship in gales. Everyone, including Dai, suffered from seasickness and were bedridden with headaches and stomach cramps.

“But I said to myself ‘This might be the only chance for me to see what’s happening and I cannot miss this opportunity’,” he recalled.

He staggered out of his cabin and waited on deck until dawn broke.

Gripping the deck railings tight and moving a step at a time, Dai tied his belt “to a ship pillar in order to keep my balance and put on the raincoat over my face as a shield”.

“I pressed the shutter constantly with the camera above my head.”

His grittiness helped him capture photos of the ship plowing through heavy waves. The show included some of these photos.

In the South Pole, with the summer temperatures at average -20 C, Dai said he steadied his camera with only his hands because the thick ice made it hard to set up his tripod.

He said he often lay in the snow to capture the awkward movements of penguins.

“I saw a lot of the South Pole in color. But I believe the dominating hues of the place are white and black. Any more color would become a burden,” he said.

Five months after returning to China, Dai was diagnosed with cancer.

“I felt it in the South Pole. My health was not good then, but I did not realize how serious it was.”

Dai received treatment and his health has improved.

Coinciding with the show, the China Photographic Publishing House has published a photography book titled Black-and- White South Pole, featuring 200 works selected from Dai’s South Pole collection.

Dai is currently preparing for a fall trip to the North Pole.
