In the late 20th century, based on a series of achievements in modern natural science, system theory evolved into a complex science through the integration with nonlinear science and the self-organization theory. This triggered a revolutionary transformation of thinking about classical science, making people closer to understanding the origin of the world. Another scientific revolution after those triggered by the theories of relativity and quantum mechanics. Under the impact of the science of complexity, ecological science has also gone through an evolution from superficial to profound and eventually transformed into a complex ecological system theory, which further narrows the distance between the natural and the social sciences. In view of the complexity of the spatial relation between the city and the rural areas, this book, edited by Zhao Ke, applies the principles and approaches of both the science of complexity and ecology to propose a concept of ecology that couples the city and the rural areas. It states that the spatial relation between a city and the countryside is built on a conditional existence and stableness of the ecological environment, which aims at efficiency, equity and vitality (sustainability). This is the result of a dynamic process in which the two systems of the city and the countryside interact, affect, and grow with each other through their coupling elements in the subsystems of society, economy, and nature, as the coupling relation of “the mutual effects between yin and yang” summarized in the Taijitu of Yijing, The Book of Changes. It elaborates the ecological coupling methods of city and country space planning, including non-construction land planning, environment evaluation on coupling conditions, coordinated spatial development, and fractal spatial optimization, aiming at providing a new approach to establishing a balanced spatial relation between city and country in China.
