Thousands of Chinese worshippers crowded into a temple in the middle of the country on Saturday to pay homage to the God of Wealth and pray for good fortune. Devotees flock to the Guiyuan Temple in Wuhan in central China on the fifth day of every Lunar New Year, to mark the birthday of the God of Wealth.

One of the legends tells the story of a prince – the son of the ancient emperor Zhuan Xu. He was only willing to wear rags and eat coarse grains. Even when offered new clothes, he would not wear them until he burnt a hole in them. People called him the “son of poverty.” After he died, people buried him, claiming the day as one to send away the son of poverty.

Few people know the story now, but the wish to be far from poverty and to welcome the new year with hope and wealth is passed along through the generations. After sending away the poverty and welcoming the God of Wealth, now it is also the time for shops to reopen for business. The new year has come with brand new prospects.

Red envelopes are a popular gift people give during important festivals and celebrations in China and some other Asian countries.

Traditionally, children and young adults receive red envelopes as a gift on Chinese New Year from their older relatives, friends of the family or neighbors.

In China, in the last couple of years, digital money has pretty much taken over.

In everyday life, notes and coins seem to be a thing of the past. Instead, even seniors use their phones to pay for a 3 yuan baozi, and a mom-and-pop store has a QR codes for electronic payment.

Since it’s so easy, with just a flick of the wrist, you can grant your friends, coworkers and miscellaneous group chats with digital envelopes. It has become quite common to send out hongbao with just a few kuai to basically everybody in your contact list throughout the holidays.

Saving money should be a priority for millennials.

An emergency fund is a necessity that can help you through difficult economic times. A fully funded emergency fund can help if you are laid off. It can also help with unexpected expenses like medical emergencies.

Additionally, saving up a down payment for a house can help you purchase a better home in an area where you are happy to stay for a longer amount of time.

Depending on your credit cards is a bad habit that can bankrupt you financially. It does more than affect your credit score. It can take away opportunities that you might otherwise have had if you did not need to make decisions based on whether or not you can meet your monthly obligations.

Being debt-free, especially of consumer debt, opens so many doors and possibilities. Stop using your credit cards today. Then focus on getting out of debt. The sooner you can do this the more opportunities you will have in the future. Consumer debt can quickly add up and if you max out your cards, it can be difficult to make ends meet.

The most important thing you can do is to take control by mastering your budget. Your budget can help you reach all of your other goals. Many people who are struggling right now and are worried about retirement never really mastered budgeting.

Too often they lived from paycheck to paycheck and had a difficult time dealing with unexpected expenses. A budget gives you the power to stop doing that. Take the time to really start budgeting today.

Chinese millennials are more financially savvy than they are believed to be. Not only do they save every cent but also invest for the future, a report says.

Those born after 1990, in particular, are more financially conscious than the previous generations, as 80 percent of the 20-somethings involved in the survey say they will manage their money, said the report, issued in late July by the Chinese mobile payments company Alipay and the think tank China New Economy Research Institute in Hangzhou.
