Social activities:

1-4. A friend of yours has just moved to a new city. Please give some advice to your friend about how to make friends in a new city. Please include specific details and examples in your response.

I am now studying in a new city far away from my hometown. I have two suggestions.

The first is that he should find a job. When having a job, he may have many workmates, and after work they may do many things together, such as shopping together, watching movies together, having parties together and so on. Then he may find friends with similar interest or hobbies.

And also he may join in some clubs that he is fond of. For example, going to the gym, there he may meet people from other industries, such as people doing IT, people engaging in fashion and so on. Then his friends’ circle may also be enlarged.

These two suggestions are helpful. Thank you.

1-19. What are the benefits of talking to older family members such as your uncles, aunts, or grandparents? Please use examples and reasons to support your answer.

To be honest, I like talking to older family members.

On one hand, talking to them broaden my horizons. My major is accounting and I am just familiar with the things in this industry. But my family members do different jobs, my aunt is a doctor and he often tells me the things happened in hospital; and my grandmother is an architect and she always shares with me about the different styles of architecture. All these make me more aware of the society.

On the other hand, talking to them help me gain experience. They may pass on their experience on many things, such as how to deal with difficulties in life, how to get along well with others, even how to make meals when I study abroad. All these really help me a lot.

1-23. What kind of strategy do you use to handle an overwhelming amount of work.

When facing this situation, I do things often based on the importance and emergency.

For example, when I have a lot of papers and assignments to finish. I will check the deadline and consider whether they are from the required classes or not. Usually the first thing I will finish is the deadline is approaching and it is from my required class, you know, the marks are really important. And then I may do the things still emergent but less important. After that, I may do the things that are important and but less emergent. Eventually, I will deal with the things not very emergent and important, such the one survey report from my optional class and it may be long before the deadline.

1-5. What is the most elective way to resolve disagreements between friends? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

In my view, the most effective way to resolve disagreements with anyone is to really understand why the other person thinks or feels that way, then we can be more considerate and compromised. For instance, last weekend I disagreed with my friend about what we should have for lunch. She felt like having Korean food whereas I was fond of Thai food. I asked her why she wanted to have Korean food. She told me that she was in fact not that hungry and could only eat in small portions, such as the Korean sushi. Having understood this, I told her that we could share our food at the Thai restaurant and I’d take care of the food that she couldn’t finish. Therefore, understanding is the best way to resolve disagreements.

1-7. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement-we learn from failure, not from success? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

I agree that we learn from failure and not from success because we all fail more often than we succeed and it’s the lessons from these failed attempts that pave out ways to our ultimate goal. For example, my uncle retired as a successful investment banker, but before the last few successful trades towards the end of his career, he actually failed numerous times. There were many times when he overlooked the instability of the companies he was investing in or when he wasn’t able to secure sufficient capital for his fund because he made some verbal mistakes when pitching to his investors. However, all these failures had taught him what he should avoid in the next trade and eventually he succeeded in his goal and retired. Therefore, I believe we learn more from our failure.

2-2. Some people believe that talking with other people is the key to success in college. Others believe observing others in silence is better. What is your opinion and why? Please include specific examples and details in your explanation.

I think talking with others tends to be more important.

Firstly, this may enhance our eloquence and being eloquent may help us succeed. Taking my major marketing for example, when having group discussions or field trips, if you don’t learn to exchange ideas or communicate with others, how can you hope to know customers’ ideas and satisfy your customers? Then you may not be a successful marketing student.

And also, this may enlarge our friends’ circle and friends may help us. My major is marketing. If I constantly communicate with many people about my ideas, share interesting things with them, I may have more friends and not only they may help me know more things in college but they may also help me propagate my products in the future.

2-5.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Happiness comes when we help others rather than ourselves? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

To be honest, I think happiness is more likely to come when we help ourselves.

Because helping ourselves to accomplish something can be more realistic and the moment we make it the instant we may feel happy. For example, after hard work and endeavor, I achieve a good mark in the TOEFL test, I feel happy; or after months of dieting and exercise, my weight is reduced and I have a better body shape, I feel delightful. I feel happy not only because I achieve something I desire but also because I can feel the real things. However, after we help other people, we may not know the final results and the things others get may not be directly correlated with ourselves. So I may not feel the real sense of happiness.

2-6. You are a leader of a student organization. There is a freshman student who is nervous in this environment. What would you do to help this student in this new environment?

In terms of this situation, usually I may do these two things.

The first is that I may constantly communicate with him. In daily life, I may talk with him on many things, such as the features of his classes, the professors we are both familiar with, the sports we often play and so on. We get to know each other through many common topics.

And also I will suggest him to join in the activities in the organization. For example, when members go out to play, such as watching movies, going to KTVs, having picnics and so on, I will invite him to join us and play with us.

After these things, I am sure he will be more likely to be less nervous about the new environment.

2-7. Is it better to grow up in a large family or a small family? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

To be honest, I prefer to grow in a large family.

The most important thing is that this may help me know more things. Actually my major is accounting and I am just familiar with the things in this industry. But I grow in a large family and my family members do different jobs; my aunt is a doctor and he often tells me the things happened between doctors and patients in hospitals; and my grandmother is an architect and she always shares with me about the different styles of architecture. My sister is an elementary school teacher and she often talks with me about the interesting things happened in schools. Thanks to these relatives, I know more things about this society and this helps me better understand the society.

2-9. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: zoos are more beneficial than harmful to animals? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

In my view, I think zoos are more harmful to animals.

First of all, to some extent zoos disable some animals’ instincts. Taking my hometown’s zoo for example, many wild tigers or lions lose their instincts to fight with others for foods, they have been accustomed to eating the foods prepared for them by breeders. But actually, their instincts should be extremely savage.

And also, zoos deprive many animals’ freedom. Still my hometown’s zoo for example, many zebras or horses are restricted at certain limited areas for activities, they lose the chance to walk around freely, to run on the plains or grasses. Although they don’t have to worry about the food resources, they lose their freedom.

That’s why I think zoos are actually more harmful to animals.

2-11. Do you agree or disagree with the statement: employees should be prohibited to listen to music at work? Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

I agree with the point that employees should be prohibited to listen to music at work.

Firstly, listening to music at work may result in the faults and mistakes. For example, if an accountant is calculating the monthly salary data of one company while listening to rock music, he may be distracted by the rhythms or melodies or lyrics, and then he may make some mistakes and the wrong data may lead to adverse results.

And also, this may decrease the efficiency at work. Still the accountant example, if listening to music, inevitably he may pay attention to the music and thus may pay less attention to his work. If not listening, he may fully concentrate on the calculating and he may finish the work much more efficiently.

2-12. When you take a trip, do you prefer to just look around, or do you prefer to take pictures and keep a journal?

In terms of these two conditions, I will definitely choose to take pictures and keep a journal.

First of all, pictures are more vivid and are easy to share with others. Taking my Dubai trip for example, by showing the pictures of the Burj Al-Arab and Dubai tower, my friends know what they look like both the outside and the inside. If merely telling the story, I cannot show others how wonderful the hotels are.

Second of all, pictures and journals can help me recall what I have experienced. By now, I have travelled 8 countries all over the world, whenever I look at those things, I will recollect the spicy food in Thai, the fresh air in Japan and the prosperity in New York. Or else the memories may fade as time goes by.

That’s why I enjoy taking pictures and keeping a journal.

2-18.Some people prefer to have their broken furniture or household appliances fixed by professionals while others prefer to fix them by themselves. Which do you prefer and why? Please use examples and reasons to support your choice.

In terms of this condition, I may try to fix them by myself.

On one hand, this may help me save money. To be honest, if I find other professionals to fix my broken furniture, I may have to spend more money. If I fix them by myself, I may only spend half or less than half of the money, it’s more economical.

On the other hand, this may help me master a skill. If I learnt how to fix the furniture or the household appliances by myself, in the future, when problems happened again, for example, the tap is leaking or the light blub is broken, I could depend on myself. Learning to fix some things should be the basic living skill.

That’s why I’d like to fix them by myself.

2-19.Do you agree with the following statement: social networking websites are good for us? Please use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

To be honest, I really think social networking websites are good for us.

First of all, they help us have more friends. For example, by using the Twitter, Facebook, We chat and so on, it’s easy for us to find people coming from the same faculty or department or the state, or people having similar hobbies and interest. Merely clicking the mouse, we may find what we want. And more friends make us more delightful.

And also, they provide us with a platform to express ourselves. By using them, we may express our ideas, thoughts, and share the pictures or music with others and so on. All these enrich our lives.

So that’s why I think those websites are good for us. Thank you.

EducationⅢ

2-13.Do you agree or disagree that it is acceptable that students disagree with their instructor? Please include details and examples in your explanation.

I agree with the point that students can disagree with their instructors.

The main reason I think is that students may have innovative ideas. For example, my major is the clothes design, sometimes when my teacher launches his designs, I have my own thoughts on how to design the buttons, how to cut the clothes, or how to decorate the colors and so on, although different maybe, yet my ideas are often acceptable. And my teacher permits me to design on myself, and the results are also desirable. However, if we all obey the instructors’ ideas, we may not be able to implement our innovative ideas. In some cases there is not the absolutely unanimous idea. I think students should be allowed to fully express their ideas.

2-14. Some people prefer to study on their own whereas others prefer to attend lectures. Which do you prefer and why? Please use examples to support your reasons.

In terms of these forms, I prefer to attend lectures.

Firstly, this way may help me broaden my horizons. For example, my major is the marketing, by attending lectures, when analyzing a marketing strategy or a marketing case in class, I may know how other students view it, what some scholars’ ideas are. However, if merely studying by myself, I have not hear so many voices.

And also, this may enhance my eloquence. Still taking my marketing major for example, when attending lectures, we often have group discussions, and we may discuss with each other, exchange our ideas or even debate with each other. All these make us more eloquent. And the good eloquence is good for marketing students.

That’s why I prefer to attend lectures to learn new things.

2-20. Do you agree with the following statement: the university should require all students to own a laptop? Please use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Definitely I think all students should own a laptop.

First of all, the laptops may better help us study. If having the laptops, whenever we meet things we don't know, we may surf on the Internet to get answers or some background information, which may help us better understand what the professor has said.

What’s more, having a laptop can better help students relieve their pressure. After a whole day’s learning, students can use the laptop to play computer games, watching movies, browsing news and so on to kill their time. They can well keep a balance between their work and study.

That’s why I think all students should own a laptop. Thank you.
