Kevin Cronin是普利斯设计集团的创始人之一,也主导建立了集团在中国的第一间办公室——于2001年成立的深圳办公室,发展和强化了集团的品牌形象。今年,普利斯设计集团迎来了其成立的第15个年头,来听听Kevin是怎么来讲述公司历史、以及集团在中国坚实发展的理念。

As a founder of Place Design Group, Kevin Cronin has been integral in developing the Place Design Group brand image through the establishment of the organisation’s first China office in 2001 in Shenzhen. Now in our 15th year, it is this history that has inspired this interview and to also learn of the philosophy behind establishing a strong foothold in China for an international company.

普利斯设计集团是最早一批在中国营运、并配备外籍设计师的景观设计公司;这在当时并不常见。

Place Design Group was one of the first foreign companies to start work within China, with the employment of expat staff.



Kevin在普利斯设计集团的工作经历主要是在中国展开的。在这里,他见证了我们从3个员工的深圳办公室发展成今天100多位设计师覆盖整个中国业务的设计公司。在此过程中,他也发现了普利斯设计集团相对于业内其它外资公司在营运上的优势。

Kevin's career within Place Design Group has predominantly been based in China, where he witnessed a company of three staff in Shenzhen expanding to over 100 staff in China. He has developed a deep insight in our operation's advantage over that of the general foreign-invested industry insiders here.

我们在中国发展的重要工作方法是两级响应。首先,在中国的员工能够为客户提供更为直接的、面对面的服务。第二,我们在中国和澳大利亚的办公室都拥有许多经验丰富的设计师;这样,我们就能随时组建起针对项目所需的工作团队。

The crucial factor in the company's development in China was the two fold response to working in China. The first being, the commitment from staff to being based in China to provide a more hands on, face to face approach. Secondly, having committed experienced designers located in offices in both China and Australia allowed us to pick a team that suited a specific style of project.

我们会将设计师进行组合,以期获得优秀的工作成果。正是基于这些工作方式,我们才在业界以我们出色的项目,赢得了良好的声誉。也正由于此,我们不仅有机会与中国主要的开发商合作,也一起创造出了不少知名的项目,如:华润金悦湾、深圳洲际大酒店、厦门艾美酒店、万象城、招商半山兰溪谷、华侨城波托菲诺、上海绿城、绿城喜来登千岛湖度假酒店。

Due to these factors, Place Design Group is well known for providing great design; we are willing to mix and match our design staff to ensure a superior outcome. This is also the reason that we have not only worked for China’s major developers , we also have a number of China’s most famous projects to our name ie. Bund Brilliance, InterContinental Shenzhen, Le Meridien Xiamen, MixC, Mont Orchard Riverlet, Portofino, Shanghai Greentown, Sheraton Qiandao Lake Resort.





1981年,Kevin在堪培拉大学完成了景观设计专业的学习,并且参加了景观学院的专业考试。现在,他是澳大利亚和马来西亚景观设计学会的注册会员。他的职业起点是堪培拉,后来他又在悉尼和珀斯继续发展。上世纪九十年代初,他开启了自己的事业,在珀斯建立了自己的公司,他所设计的项目不仅限于澳洲;他在欧洲和亚太地区也留下了许多作品。

Kevin completed his qualification in Landscape Architecture at the University of Canberra in 1981 and undertook his Professional Landscape Institute exams shortly after. He is currently a Registered Landscape Architect with the Australian and Malaysian Landscape Institutes. He commenced working in Canberra, then in Sydney and Perth until he started his own business in the early 1990's. During this time Kevin was based in Perth, however he has worked extensively on a variety of projects across globe from Europe to Asia Pacific region.

我参与了各种类型的项目,有政府开发的、也有私有企业开发的,在景观设计和城市设计方面积累了丰富的经验,包括:结构规划、景观分析和评估、总体规划、概念设计、扩初设计、文本编制和合同事务等。

I was involved in a broad range of projects and have extensive experience in Landscape Architectural and Urban Design projects covering both public and private projects, including structure planning, landscape analysis and evaluation and master planning through concept design, design development, documentation and contract administration.

在亚洲的工作成为了Kevin职业经历最重要的一部分。长期在第一线工作、接触各种类型的项目,不仅练就了设计上的专业技能,还成长成为了一个拥有丰富管理经验的团队领导。

Most of Kevin’s professional experience has been gained from working within Asia. After so many years' of work in the frontier and in extensive categories, Kevin has not only accumulated a great deal of professional experience in design work itself, but also grown to be an excellent team leader with abundant management experience.

在加入普利斯设计集团后,Kevin来到了中国。

Despite having a strong working relationship within Asia since the early 1990's, Kevin finally decided to move to China to further develop his career after he joined Place Design Group.

这里项目非常有意思、规模都很大、客户的目标也很令人兴奋。

The projects were more interesting, the scale was larger and the clients goals were more exciting for me professionally.

在亚洲、或者说在中国工作与在澳洲太不同了。并不是说气候或地理情况造成了这种不同,而是在实际工作中需要攻克的技术问题。而最为显著的不同就是地区文化,这是我们在设计中需要顾及到的。在中国的任何项目,在规模上都是很惊人的;因此也需要通过一些必要的手段,使项目能融入到当地城市的整体中。

Working in Asia or China is very different to working in Australia. It is not necessarily the climate or geography that makes the experience different, as these are technical issues that need to be overcome. The most marked difference is actually the regional culture that needs to be considered. Any project in China is marked by size and the required facilities necessary to have a project connect into the local city fabric.



在Kevin在中国设计的项目中,其个人比较喜欢的美丽沙湾在规模上就非常有优势。

Among Kevin's projects in China, one of his personal favourites stands out as a project in which scale mattered.

美丽沙湾占地316公顷,紧邻海口,完全建立在填海土地上,本身就具有一定的独特性。项目集商业、娱乐、教育、住宅,以及各种私密和公共的空间于一地,更因其位于海边的地理优势而独具特色。这样大规模、富有愿景的项目在世界范围内也是少有的,也从没有私有开发商来开发这么大的项目。

The Meilisha Cove Development, has an area of 316 hectares. It boasts unique features; significantly located entirely on reclaimed land abutting of the Haikou City. The mix of commercial, entertainment, educational, residential and both private and public open space systems makes this a truly unique development. Its' coastal positioning also made it a unique and exciting project. There are very few places in the world where a project of this size and vision would be undertaken and it would be unheard of for aprivate developer to undertake this scale of project anywhere else.



Kevin坦言在进入中国早期,设计上更为自由些。

Kevin admits that the design experience was a little bit freer in his early time working in China.

客户会比较快的接受我们的经验和专业知识,以产品为主导。

Clients accepted our experience and expertise more readily and were produce focused.

Kevin所喜欢的另外一个项目——波托菲诺可谓是一个很好的案例。

One of his other favorite projects, the Portofino was developed in this context.

一方面可能是我们的团队和其它国际知名的咨询公司一起合作,但更为重要的是,这个是深圳第一个有主题的开发项目。这个项目旨在重塑深圳地产市场。波托菲诺脱颖而出;即使过了这么多年,与新建项目比,仍然毫不逊色。

Partially because our team were working with other International consultants, but also because it was the first major themed project being undertaken in Shenzhen. Its aim was to reshape the Shenzhen property market and Portofino stood out. The end result was pretty unique for China real-estate at that time and even now it holds its own against newer projects.

Kevin非常注重设计和开发的细节。

In Kevin's opinion, looking at the design and developing the detail is his major focus.

我会来看整体的设计工作,但是更为关注细节上的问题。我坚信,对于确立项目的个性,细节至少和整体一样重要。如果在细节上有所缺失,那么整个设计就不完整了。

I identify the overall design but am more interested in the detail of the design. I firmly believe that true identity of a projects design is in the detail just as much as in the overall. If the detail is lacking, then the design is lacking.







中国从各方面来看都是一个正在成长中的市场,景观设计业也是如此。但是,我们也看到了非常激烈的竞争,而且对于价格的极具关注。这将会影响到中国的景观设计业,也将会限制优秀作品的产生。当然,我们对未来还是保持乐观的。过去,中国似乎在追赶世界上流行的风格;而现在,政府提出了不再建造奇奇怪怪的建筑,因此我们认为,中国将能发现自己的设计风格。

China is an emerging market in every aspect, so too is Landscape Architecture. However, the competition here is very fierce and incredibly financially focused. It will impact the Chinese landscape industry and result in fewer projects of note. The reality is, we still stay optimistic toward the future. In the past, China has been in a catch up phase where styles from around the world have been introduced to the market. Now time with the new government decree restricting strange architecture, we potentially have the opportunity for China to discover its own branding style.



在中国,有3亿人口将在城镇化进程中成为城市居民,而这也将一定程度上推动商业和住宅的发展。城镇化的进程将使中产阶级进一步壮大。在这一背景下,为中产阶级所需的国内旅游业和医疗保健行业及养老业等将得到发展机会。

The government has called for the urbanization of 300 million people into both major and regional cities and this will partially drive the residential and commercial sector. However, as this urbanisation occurs China will experience expansion of the middle class. This means an expansion of downtime and therefore an increase in the need for domestic tourism based developments. China's surging middle class also expects more from their health service now and this will push for a boom in the medical based development and aged care facilities.

因此,我认为开发的重点将从标准化的商业和住宅混合向更为专业的医疗、养老、旅游和生态环保方面发展,这也符合更为符合中国庞大的旅游业和老龄化人口所需。对于所有这一行业的咨询师来说,这都是个巨大的机会,也给予了所有在中国的设计师一个更为光明的未来。

I think the trend for development will be a specific focus away from the standard commercial or residential mix to medical, aged care, tourism and eco based developments to cater for China's massive tourism industry and aging population. This is a tremendous opportunity for all consultants and is the bright light for future Chinese based design consultants.

Kevin Cronin's Bio and Project Experience in Place Design Group

Kevin在景观设计领域有30多年的经验,在澳大利亚和亚洲许多地区参与过大量项目,在景观设计和城市设计上拥有丰富的经验。他参与过政府和私企项目,包括发展结构规划、景观分析和评估、总体规划,工作职责涉及概念方案设计、设计开发、文本编制和合同管理。

普利斯设计集团在2001年成立,Kevin是创始人之一,目前他是深圳办公室负责人 。Kevin在1980年代早期在堪培拉完成景观设计专业学习。

Kevin Cronin has over 30 years experience as a Landscape Architect and has been involved in a broad range of projects and has extensive experience in Landscape Architectural and Urban Design projects in many parts of Australia and Asia. His experience covers both public and private enterprise projects, including structure planning, Landscape analysis and evaluation and master planning through concept design, design development, documentation and contract administration.

Kevin is a founding Director of Place Design Group in 2001. He is currently the Manager of the Shenzhen Office. Kevin completed his qualification in Landscape Architecture in Canberra in the early 1980s.
