StudentBotanicalAssociation:Wecanfindpeoplewiththesameobsession...

Another year, another spring and once again, the Tsinghua campus is covered

by the colors of Spring. Just like the oil paintings by renowned artist Claude

Monet, Tsinghua is extra glorious. Every spring marks the Anniversary of

Tsinghua. This year marks Tsinghua’s 105th Birthday and to celebrate

this event, countless people with their love for Tsinghua venture into the

campus to greet the beauty offered by this season. With their cameras and

drawing tools, they not only capture the beauty of spring but also the splendid

of campus life.

Due to the variety of plants on campus, Tsinghua campus is often regarded as

“the second Botanic Garden in Beijing.” However what is the real difference

between the various peonies in the peony garden? And how about the

Bauhinia?......As students admire such scenery, no doubt, they’ll also have some

questions to ask. From the start of March 2015, several “flower broadcasts” have

been made on the Wechat account “THU Botanical”. It provided answers to some of

the questions and allowed the students to have a better understanding of

botany.

With its fresh style, simple layout and high-quality pictures, the

informative broadcasts became popular in the Wechat circles. The creator behind

this account, Tsinghua University Student Botanical Association (also referred

to as the “Plants Association”) gradually became a part of students’ life.

The predecessor of the Plants Association is Tsinghua University Student

Ecological Association (established in 2007). It changed its name to Botanical

Association in March 2015. According to Yang Zhuo, the chief of Botanical

Association and a senior at the School of Architecture, the original intention

of the association is to promote plant culture, engage more people to love and

understand nature and make biology and botanic studies more interesting. The aim

was to provide an interactive learning platform for all.

The Botanical Association is responsible for several online broadcasts:

“Flower broadcast”, “Fruits broadcast” and “Leaves broadcast” offers information

about flowers, fruits and leaves. “Tsinghua Pastoral” offers the chance to grow

your own plants, “Taxonomy Classes” allows you to attend lectures at the Chinese

Academy of Sciences and “Let’s go to the frontline” allows you to participate in

activities alongside Zoological Association, lotus cultivation and much more.

Last but not least, “Waste Exchange”, helps to promote awareness and

participation in environmental protection.

2016’s activities are centered on the months of April to May. Among them,

“Tsinghua’s Pastoral” will be greatly promoted. Yang Zhuo said that they would

install four gardens of one square and a garden of six square meters between

Tingtaoyuan canteen and the campus river. They will be used to plant herbs,

vegetables and flowers.

Like what Yang Zhuo said before, the Botanical Association helps to fill in

the blank for the camps and offers a new perspective to appreciate the hidden

beauty that plants possess. It promotes the importance of our natural

environment as well as a greener and healthier way of living. “To be the one who

understand the most about spring, to be a more knowledgeable Tsinghua person”

are the common goals for students at the Botanical Association.

Once you interact with botanic life, you will learn to appreciate the state

of mind of those students who call it their obsession. Just like the slogan from

the Botanical Association’s Wechat account, “Here, you will not only see the

grace of these plants but, like meeting someone that you love, you’ll be

profoundly moved by its presence……plants speak a quiet language in this long

continuous lifespan and there are more for us to discover.”
