庆祝化学系建系90周年

建系早期,清华大学化学系的第一任系主任为杨光弼教授,第二任为高崇熙教授。初创时期化学系设四年制本科,1929年第一届本科生共14人毕业。1931年化学系设立化学研究所,同年招收二年制研究生。这一时期毕业的本科生及研究生中,后来当选为中国科学院院士的有张大煜、袁翰青、张青莲、高振衡、冯新德、时钧、汪德熙、武迟、陈冠荣、王世真等化学界前辈。抗日战争南迁期间,清华、北大、南开三校化学系合并,又共同培养出朱亚杰、肖伦、曹本熹、唐敖庆、何炳林、张滂、陈茹玉、申泮文、黄培云等著名学者。新中国成立后,1952年高校院系调整将清华化学系的大部分教授、学生转入北京大学。在调整之前,清华大学化学系已是当时国内学术水平最高的化学系之一。
1978年,清华大学在化工系恢复招收“物理化学及仪器分析”专业学生,并于1985年11月正式复建化学系。复系后的化学系于1990年建立物理化学博士点,2000年成为化学一级学科博士点,2001年设立了博士后流动站。经过30年的奋斗和耕耘,清华化学系已成为我国重要的化学研究和人才培养基地。
现在的清华大学化学系下设无机化学、有机化学、分析化学、物理化学、高分子化学与物理五个研究所。此外还设有纳米与材料化学、化学生物学、有机电子学、理论化学和超分子化学五个交叉学科和一个实体的基础分子科学中心、两个教育部重点实验室。化学系的科研方向不仅涵盖了现代化学的各主要领域,而且也包括了21世纪化学发展的最新生长点,如:化学基础分子科学研究,生命过程中的化学问题,复杂样品分析新方法与新仪器,有机光电子材料与器件,新型晶体功能材料,超分子自组装和纳米结构材料,分子药物的合成与中药复方的现代化学分析,导电高分子材料的合成与性能,以新能源及环境保护为目标的新催化系统等等。
清华大学化学系现有教职员工逾百人,其中中科院院士5人,同时还聘请了国内外十多位著名学者担任双聘教授、兼职教授和客座教授,一批高水平的中青年教师已成为教学和科研的骨干力量。化学系拥有众多大中型仪器设备,承担大量国家级、省部级课题研究工作,并获得多项奖励。在人才培养上,化学系一贯倡导理论教学与实践教学相结合的原则,积极探索交叉型科研人才的培养模式,本科生打下扎实基础,研究生直接参与国际前沿课题的研究,使教学水平和人才培养质量大大提高。

In 1926, Tsinghua School (the predecessor of
Tsinghua University) established the Department of Chemistry and it has already
gone through a full 90 years of ups and downs. Although the Department of
Chemistry went through several changes and has been interrupted, developments in
Chemistry never halted. The Department of Chemistry has always held onto the
fine tradition of "Self Discipline and Social Commitment” and has made great
achievements in research and education. It is an influential force on the
international stage.
Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University
was amongst one of the earliest built structures in the campus. The first dean
of the Department was Professor Yang Guangbi, the second was Professor Gao
Chongxi and a four-year undergraduate course was the earliest course to be set
up in the department. In 1929, the first group consisting of 14 people graduated
with the degree. In 1931, a two-year postgraduate program was formally set up.
From these undergraduates and postgraduates, many were elected to the Chinese
Academy of Sciences such as Zhang Dayu, Yuan Hanqing, Zhang Qinglian, Gao
Zhenheng, Feng Xinde, Shi Jun, Wang Dexi and many well-known chemists. During
the Anti-Japanese War, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nankai
University merged to jointly train scholars such as Zhu Yajie, Xiao Lun, Cao
Benxi, Tang Aoqing, Zhang Pang, Chen Ruyu, Shen Panwen, Huang Peiyun etc. In
1952, most of professors and students from the Department of Chemistry at
Tsinghua University were moved into Peking University. Even before such
adjustment, Tsinghua’s Department of Chemistry already has been among the top
departments of China at the time.
In 1978, Tsinghua recruited students in the
professional science field of “Physical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis". In
November 1985, the Department of Chemistry entered into a period of rapid
development. In 1990, the Department of Chemistry set up more facilities and a
working station for doctoral students. After 30 years of struggle and hard work,
Department of Chemistry has become an important research and talent-training
base for the country.
There are five institutes under the Department of
Chemistry. They are, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical
chemistry, physical chemistry and polymer chemistry and physics. It also has
five interdisciplinary science centers such as nano-materials, chemical biology,
theoretical chemistry, molecular chemistry etc. There are also two key
laboratories of Ministry of Education. The direction of chemistry research not
only covers all the main areas of modern chemistry but also is a starting point
for the latest developments in the field of 21st Century research in Chemistry.
Some examples are: the analysis of complex samples, new methods and instruments,
organic optoelectronic materials and devices, new functional crystal materials,
nano-structured materials, synthetic molecule drugs and traditional Chinese
medicine, properties of conductive polymer materials, new catalytic systems with
new goals that are environmentally friendly and much more.
There are more than 100 staff members at the
Department of Chemistry including 5 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
A dozen well-known domestic and foreign scholars have been hired as in-house,
adjunct and visiting professors. A group of high-level young teachers have
become key members in teaching and research. There are a number of large to
medium-sized equipments at the department and it has taken on board a variety of
national and provincial research work, thus receiving numerous recognition and
awards. In terms of education, the Department of Chemistry has consistently
highlighted the need to combine theory and practice as well as setting up a
training mode, which encourages multiple scientific researches. This helps to
lay a solid foundation for students. Standard of teaching and training has been
greatly improved under this philosophy.
When looking at the future, the Department of
Chemistry warmly welcomes all students and apart from encouraging excellence in
learning, the department also hopes to train young chemists from both China and
abroad to join together in the research, education and development of chemistry.
That way, they are able to propel the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua
University into the world-class!
