Search for Daoism in Wudang

Early morning on Dec 24, 2015, we departed from Beijing airport and arrived in the afternoon at our long-for Daoist holy land. Light rains drizzling all the way as if washed away the worldly dust on us inside out.

Rain stopped and the sky was cleansed when we reached to the foot of Wudang Mountain.  In sunset, we breathed its clean air, getting on the day’s last bus up to the mountain, where Daoist Gu Shining awaited us.

Following Gu, we stepped down to the circuitous trail that took us to a simple house half way on the mountain side, where range upon range of mountains afar.  We all laid down our luggage and gathered in the sitting room, looking around and noticed Daoist paintings, a long bamboo flute and a taiji sword, which obviously are used by Gu for his practice of Daoism.

We cooked our tea and sat around a fire, fighting each other for Gu’s explanation of our respective knowledge on Daoist practices and theories.  On some specific approach to Daoist practice, we each gave some opinions and understandings, sometimes with fierce debate but finally all felt fulfilled with learned thoughts.  Outside our house, a full moon hanging up in the sky brightened the darkness and hushed everything around us.  We slept soundly through the night.

One day’s success lies in the morning.  On Dec 25, 2015, we followed Gu’s words and all got up early.  Soft wind in the mountains touching our face, crisp and clear air going through our lungs, we city people all felt drunk.  In sunrise, along the mountain slope, we began practicing Taiji bashi (eight fashion Taiji) with Gu leading us at the front.

As Gu said to us, Daoist practices mainly for energy, air and spirit with air dominating the role.  Thus use of air commands temperance of force with the flexible, while attacking assists with defending, giving full rooms for stepping either forward or backward.  Isn’t our life pretty much like this?  It needs a steadfast mind, on which we rely so as to balance our moves and achieve a freedom.

In two day visit, we went to all major sites in Wudang Mountain, experienced the simplicity of Taizi (prince) Slope, the grandness of Golden Roof, the solemnity of Zixiao (Red Cloud) Palace as well as the ease of Feisheng Ya (Rising Cliff).  They’ve all quietly told us their own stories of practicing Daoism.  Prince from kingdom of paradise, i.e. Zhenwu (true mighty) Emperor, started at Taizi Slope for practicing Daosim, where we climbed up to Golden Roof, the very top of the Wudang Mountain.

We afterwards went to the Rising Cliff, where Zhenwu Emperor practiced Daoism for ten years.  Legend goes that five beautiful women embodied by a Daoist spirit in heaven came to comb Zhenwu’s hair.  No matter how they flirted him, he stayed unmoved so they felt so much ashamed and jumped down to the valley.  Attempting to save them, Zhenwu jumped down too but only got by five colorful pieces of clouds, which enwrapped him and took him up into the sky.

During the trip, we met quite a few groups of visitors with tour guides telling them legends of Wudang.  However our Daoist guide Gu obviously knows much more and almost everything about both Wudang and Daoist essence.  With his preach on true meaning of Daoist practice, we all seemed to understand that a person who practices Daoism needs doing it not only from bottom of his heart and depth of his spirit but also by experiment from real behavior in everyday life.

Perhaps someone would ask why bothering a long travel to Wudang for Daoist cultures or designs?  Many Daoist buildings near us boast an even longer history.  However, one of us texted his feeling about this trip: “Wudang is characterized by over 72 mounts in a vast area of 310 square kms that renders a unique air and spirit, which in turn cultivates a Daoist cradle.  We went through hardships of climbing before reaching a cave where we found a hermit, who taught us what Dao is.  Without difficulties of climbing we won’t be able to realize the true essence of Daoism.”

Nevertheless, we believe real practice of Daoism lies in those palaces and buildings built along mountain slopes and roofs over 1000 years ago.  The intricate road hanging half way among mountains together with mists and thin fogs rising down below the valleys is but a modern wonder.

On Dec 26, 2015 Gu brought us to Taizi (prince) Cave, located at waist of a mount.  A place once taken by prince from Kingdom of Paradise is now lived a senior Hermit Jia.  We asked him when he came here.  He answered with a smile: “I cannot remember.  It has been quite a while.”  Deep in the mountain for decades, with four seasons changing, apparently he has no need of knowing the years.

The designer from Suzhou, the most inquisitive about Daoist hermit, asked Jia: “Would you please tell us about Dao.”  He answered much to our surprise: ”I don’t know.”  After a second of silence, Hermit Jia spelled such words which set us into deep thinking: “You asked me what is Dao, I cannot tell you clearly.  Whatever I said is but my own understanding that is not Dao.  All things in universe is like our body, mountains and rivers our bones and bloods.  Life is like a Daoist cradle with good or bad balanced.  What we need is but to do what we should do.  The Daoist shelters and palaces are but ferries while hermits and Daoist priests are like boatmen.  Once Dao is inside our heart, it could be anywhere.  You couldn’t get Dao even living in Taoist abbeys if your heart doesn’t hold Dao.”

After our fairwell to the senior hermit, we each embarked on a long run life, where Dao is the most needed.  I felt so much to say but said nothing.  What I would say was but my own understanding about Dao.  Your Dao lies in your own understandings and experiences.  I’d like to be the pavement for you to step over to your journey for your Dao.  I’m right here waiting to serve you for your well prepared Wudang trip.
