中国铁路之父——詹天佑
詹天佑(1861 年—1919 年),中国近代铁路工程专家,中国首位铁路总工程师。其负责修建了京张铁路等工程,有“中国铁路之父”“中国近代工程之父”之称。

1881 年,詹天佑留学回国,在国内一无资本、二无技术、三无人才的艰难局面面前,满怀爱国热情,受命修建京张铁路。他以忘我的吃苦精神,走遍了北京至张家口之间的山山岭岭,只用了四年时间就修成了外国人需时四年才能修完的京张铁路。工程费用只是外国人估价的五分之一。

1905 年8 月,京张铁路正式开工。詹天佑亲自带学生和工人,背着标杆,经纬仪,日夜奔波在崎岖的山岭上。在八达岭、青龙桥一带,山峦重叠,陡壁悬岩、勘探和施工进入最困难的阶段,要开四条隧道,其中最长的达一千多米。詹天佑经过精确测量计算,决定采取分段施工法,这样既保证了施工质量,又加快了工程进度。凿洞时,大量的石块全靠人工一锹锹地挖,涌出的泉水要一担担地挑出来,身为总工程师的詹天佑毫无架子,与工人同挖石,同挑水,一身污泥一脸汗。他还鼓舞大家说:“京张铁路是我们用自己的人、自己的钱修建的第一条铁路,全世界的眼睛都在望着我们,必须成功!”“无论成功或失败,决不是我们自己的成功和失败,而是我们国家的成功和失败!”

The Father of Chinese Railway — Zhan Tianyou
Born in 1861, passed away in 1919, Zhan Tianyou was an expert in railway engineering in modern China and was China’s first railway chief engineer. He took charge of the construction of Jingzhang Railway, enjoying the reputation of “the Father of Chinese Railway” and “the Father of Modern China Engineering”.

Zhan Tianyou returned home from abroad in 1881, with a passion for the country, he accepted the order to build Jingzhang Railway with no capital, no technology and no talented people. Zhan Tianyou bore hardship, overcame difficulties, walking through all the mountains and valleys between Zhangjiakou and Beijing. Four years later, Jingzhang Railway was built. What Zhan Tianyou finished in four years may took foreigners to finish in fourteen years and the cost of construction was 1/5 cheaper than the one foreigners estimated.

The construction of Jingzhang Railway started in August,1905, together with his students and workers, carrying surveyor's pole and theodolite, Zhan Tianyou tramped over mountains through ravines day and night. The exploration and construction ran into great difficulty in the region between Badaling and Qinglong bridge where huge mountains overlaps with steep cliffs, crags  were everywhere. To solve this problem, four tunnels were needed with the longest one reaching more than 1,000 meters. After making careful measurement and calculation, Zhan Tianyou decided to divide the whole process into sections to ensure a high-speed construction process and a good quality of the product. When cutting holes, large amount of stone was carried away by shovels, when spring gushing out, water was carried away by shoulder poles and buckets. As chief engineer, Zhan Tianyou never gave attitude, he worked with workers and got himself exhausted. He encouraged the workers by saying :”We have to do this and we have to make it successful! Jingzhang Railway has drawn the attention of the world because it will be the first railway in China that built by our own Chinese people using our own money. The success and failure of the railway not only concerns ourselves but our country.”
