Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Bayern Munich players all shook his hand and congratulated Manchester United on their Champions League victory in 1999.

The English side stole a dramatic victory with injury-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Ottmar Hitzfeld's team.

Ferguson has revealed, though, that he met the Bayern Munich team the next season when he went to watch them play Rangers.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Ferguson said: 'There are some great examples of how you handle defeat.

'We won the 1999 final in Barcelona and Hitzfeld was devastated, you could tell that. How you recover from that, no one knows. But he did because they won the European Cup shortly after that.

'The following season I went to see Rangers play Bayern Munich, going to see a player. And after the game, Markus Hoerwick, who is the PA at Bayern Munich, said "Ottmar would like you to join him for dinner" in one of the lounges.

'I go into the lounge and his two brothers are there. "Fantastic to meet you Mr Ferguson, fantastic performance last year." But talk about magnamity, it was absolutely brilliant.

'Then Ottmar came, and said "it's great to see you". And then, all of a sudden, all of the Bayern players started coming up to shake my hand and congratulate us on beating them in the final.

'Can you believe that? Now that's a great example.'
