谁在元宵节搞事情?北外国际伦敦私人办公室的CampusMate

 

儿子在第二课的时候曾着重讲过membrane(膜),而我脑子里反应的是man brain(男人的脑子),讲了半天我实在忍不住问他:Why not woman’s brain(为什么不是女人的脑子)?把儿子气得撞墙的心都有啦!...



元宵节之际,儿子又在CampusMate上和他那位牛津神经科学专业在读博士女神开聊,上次他们聊的是剑桥、UCL和牛津的校园生活,我在一旁听得带劲,还有插嘴的欲望,但这次我彻底歇菜,因为他们聊的是neuron和membrane,辛亏我这几天连续听儿子讲了几节神经科学的微课,这两个词还算听得懂,尽管如此,他们两人的交谈对我来说就是foreign language(外语!)。

在这次交流之前,儿子看了女神推荐的哈佛大学教授的网上公开课,他以前主要是在Futurelearn和Cousera上看网课,这回被女神引导到了edX, 尤其是他把之前在Coursera上学习的芝加哥大学教授的课程和edX上哈佛教授的课程进行对比,觉得收获更大。基于这个输入,他们两人聊得非常有料,从儿子的反思看,他从对方的提问中尤其获益,帮助他理清自己的思路和赋予看待问题的不同视角。下面是儿子的简短反思。

Major gains

  1. Tutorial-stylelearning: In our second session we focused on neurons and membranes. Prior tothe session, I watched some online course videos on the topic and generatedsome questions. During the sessions, I shared my questions, and Ainslie alsoprepared some questions for me to think about. There were more opportunitiesfor me to express my own understanding of the topic than the Pioneer Academicssessions I had before.
  2. Challengingquestions: I found her questions thought provoking. Some of them were aboutplanning experiments, and they helped with my organization of thoughts. Irealized how I could complicate the question, and how I should try to approachtasks from simpler bases.
  3. Newresources: She recommended an online course by Harvard university. Thecourse is really well designed. I would not have been able to find the coursemyself.




PS:上周开始,我让儿子每天给我讲不超过18分钟的微课,普及神经科学知识,到现在已经讲了六课了,但由于他不是一个好老师(不备课,讲着讲着就走题,从不解释术语),我更是一个白丁学生(什么理化生常识统统是30年前的事情了),所以学得不好。他在第二课的时候曾着重讲过membrane(膜),而我脑子里反应的是man brain(男人的脑子),讲了半天我实在忍不住问他:Why not woman’s brain(为什么不是女人的脑子)?把儿子气得撞墙的心都有啦!
