I am often asked why the lessons learned and the skills acquired at Camp as so “sticky”? How is it that the life skills that our campers learn in just a few weeks become so thoroughly integrated and lasting?

The answer lies in the way these skills are taught; by caring counselors who love your children and can relate this learning to their lives.

We have an incredible team of counselors and specialists, and they take the time to make complex things simple, and to help your children through the difficult moments. In the context of such caring relationships, amazing growth is possible.

Bunk conflict becomes an opportunity for critical thinking and problem solving, and effective communication. Everyone has many chances to practice leadership and teamwork, and receive instant feedback about what works and what doesn’t in any given situation. Every moment of Camp life is a learning opportunity and we do our best to capitalize on as many of the million moments that we spend together as possible.

But the glue that holds our Camp community together are the relationships that we form. As the summer began, I was confident that our staff would provide your children with a wonderful camp experience, spending their time each day to create opportunities for your children to exceed their own expectations, and to build and strengthen the relationships with other children and staff that lie at the heart of the Camp experience.

Camp is ultimately about connection and a sense of belonging, and we are confident that your children are feeling connected to their bunkmates, to their counselors, and to the many specialists that work with them every day. This sense of connection and belonging helps your children know that they are loved and supported, and allows them to reach out to take the safe risks that produce meaningful growth.

We have also worked hard each day to help your children strengthen their “growth mindset”—to believe in themselves and their ability to learn anything they wish to if they use good learning strategies and are persistent and determined. We want them to internalize this view of themselves, as it can become a powerful force in helping them to succeed at Camp, in school and in life.

As Visiting Day approaches, I am confident that you will find that your children have already built many of the critical skills that we practice each day, strengthened their belief in themselves, gained new insights, become more resilient, and earned the confidence that comes with independence.
