Carpenters Workshop Gallery New York is pleased to present ‘Art Light’ from 26 January to 4 March 2017. After its great success in Paris in 2016 and celebrating the gallery’s 10 year anniversary, the exhibition will feature works from artists Atelier Van Lieshout, Sebastian Brajkovic, Nacho Carbonell, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Ingrid Donat, Johanna Grawunder, Stuart Haygarth, Mathieu Lehanneur, Frederik Molenschot, Random International, Giacomo Ravagli, Studio Drift, Studio Job, Charles Trevelyan, Morgane Tschiember and Erwin Wurm. Each artist’s work will be presented as a solo show highlighting the best of their sculptural lighting designs.

Atelier Van Lieshout

Cast in bronze and typical of AVL’s dark humour and fixation on distopia, Dutch design studio Atelier Van Lieshout’s ‘Helmet lamp #2’ and ‘Crypto Helmet Lamp #1’ take lamps beyond their aesthetic purpose inspiring deep reflection and sobriety.

Artist Joep van Lieshout founded Atelier Van Lieshout in 1995 for conceptual reasons. His work explores ecology, ideology, philosophy, human existence, life and death. Combining Surrealist and Minimalist forms in his sculpture, Van Lieshout creates controversial thematic bodies of work which might be interpreted as sinister, while also conveying humour. Atelier Van Lieshout’s installations experiment with media, the boundary between art, architecture and human constructions, whilst exploring the position of man in society, autarky, organisational systems and relationships with reproduction and power.

For ‘Art Light’, the gallery will also show the iconic ‘Pappamamma Lamp’ in a finely-crafted polished Bronze. At first seemingly abstract, a closer look reveals the representation of human conception with a dissected female and male reproductive organ, united by a foetus connected to an umbilical cord of light. A work typical of AVL’s dark, deep yet decorative aesthetic.

Sebastian Brajkovic

Lathe Lamp

The ‘Lathe Lamp’ expresses a notion largely explored by the designer: movement. The symmetrical, rotated form turned out of aluminium on a CNC lathe machine is a great combination of advanced technique and sculptural approach.

The ‘Lathe’ series, expanded for his first solo show at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in 2008, returns to his original fascination with rotation and the idea of turned furniture. Through his in depth explorations of the theoretical and the technical, Seabstian Brajkovic creates an aesthetic balance of structure, freedom and form. Sculpted by hand before being moulded, the sculpture is a perfect result of traditional savoir-faire and new digital techniques, harnessing the possibilities of contemporary design aids.

Nacho Carbonell

Using materials such as steel and concrete, the industrial origins of Nacho Carbonell’s ‘Cocoon’ works are forgotten when we see the natural forms they evoke. The artists says he sees objects as “living organisms that come to life and surprise you with their behavior.” The ‘Cocoon’ series appear to breath and sway in their idle state.

A designer whose self-stated aim is to, “appeal to the imagination” he has certainly achieved this. Nacho Carbonell was nominated for “Design of the Year” by the London Design Museum in 2009 for his work “Evolution.” A year later he was named “Designer of the Future” at Design Miami. It was at this fair that he first exhibited his trademark organic shapes made of congealed natural fibers and textures that are ready to take life. This recognition made his name as a designer to watch.

Vincenzo De Cotiis

‘DC 1609’ lamp 是‘Progetto

Vincenzo de Cotiis likes to describe

his work as a ‘perfect imperfection’. Mixing: ‘old’ with ‘new’,

‘precious’ with ‘industrial’ as well as combining ‘rough’ and ‘raw’

textures with ‘smooth’ and ‘polished’ surfaces, the designer blends both

past and present to create transformative and organic pieces.

The ‘DC 1609’ lamp, is part of the

‘Progetto Domestico’ collection. Contemporary techniques of

manufacturing combine with experimental procedures that help shape

processed materials with recycled parts. This ongoing interiors project

offers the possibility of understanding and witnessing everyday objects

in a spotlight that outshines its original purpose. Characterized by

materials worn and deformed by time that come to life again in

unexpected shapes, the pieces evoke luxurious industrialisation.

Ingrid Donat

Ingrid Donat

After a major retrospective at the New

York gallery at the end of 2016, Carpenters Workshop Gallery presents

the designer’s ‘Floor Lamp’ showing clear sign of the designer’s

inspiration taken from tribal art.

Ingrid Donat masters a variety of

materials that include rich, natural resources such as bronze and

leather. She also incorporates rarer materials into her work such as

parchment one can see on the lampshade of the ‘Floor Lamp’ revealed in

this exhibition. The designer also deals with her repertoire of signs:

loops, squares, circles, rings, staples, lines, interlacing… repeated

and obsessive patterns that take possession of the surface, such as a

released litany.

Johanna Grawunder

Johanna Grawunder

Johanna Grawunder began her career as

an architect before turning into lighting design. Her conceptual lights

explore the possibilities of technology through elegant sophisticated

forms. Minimal and sober, her lighting sculptures seem like vanishing

installations floating in the air, creating optical illusions.

Playing with the material reflections,

transparencies and opacities, light trajectories and deviations, the

designer perfectly handles the physicial properties and sensitivities of

the materials and surfaces she combines to design magical illuminated

objects.

Mathieu Lehanneur

Mathieu Lehanneur will exhibit a solo

show during ‘Art Light’ with three works representing the different

threads of his sculptural research.

The first work is from the S.M.O.K.E

series which combines rare quality rose-quartz with hand-blown glass. It

will be accompanied by his iconic chandelier piece ‘Les Cordes’ which

evolved from an original commission for the Château Borély – home to

Marseille’s Decorative Arts Museum. Finally, a new series of smaller

table lights that use the same glass-forming techniques as ‘Les Cordes’

will be exhibited for the first time.

Stuart Haygarth

‘Raft Cats’ by British artist Stuart

Haygarth is a light made up of hundreds of ceramic cat figurines. A

sarcastic and humoristic object interrogating the notion of collection

and the everyday life objects surrounding our domestic environments and

collective unconscious.

The artist has a room in his East

London studio dedicated to the sorting and classification of found

objects that he re-uses for his sculptures.
