Banyan, the March of Life

My thoughts frequently return to the banyan trees which are the soul of my home.

“What soul of beauty have you pursued?” I was once asked.

“The banyan,” I replied.

The flow of my feelings and thoughts retraces the rugged mountains of my home, the eventful bygone days. When I contemplate more carefully, I feel that the banyan is the one and only soul I have yearned for and still do today.

The banyan tree has my everlasting love.

The banyan tree that I love has swept countless strangers off their feet into eulogy and marvel.

Such is its magnificence that you need only come near it to feel the utter magic that saturates the entire tree. This is life.

Shrewd philosophers have claimed that beauty is a person or thing full of life. I believe them; I believe them because of the banyan tree.

All my childhood and adolescence I watched the huge banyan trees so instilled with life.

I like the green trees for their stillness when there is no wind, their dignity, fullness, contentment and the way they stand loftily like silent mountains.

I like them even better when there is a wind, when every leaf catches the slightest breeze just like a flapping sail on a boat. When there is a gentle wind, the foliage turns suddenly to hundreds and thousands of green, fluttering butterflies weaving with combined efforts a brocade of life.

I am even more enraptured when a strong wind rises. Then the banyan tree is transformed in the twinkling of an eye from a silent mountain into a surging sea, its top rolling like waves, rustling against the vast blue sky.

A sentimental friend from the north told me how he was stunned at the sight of a tall banyan when he first came to the south. He was stirred for a long, long time by the gentle yet powerful waves of the banyan, whose dense foliage attempts to envelop the great earth, whose top attempts to swallow up the clouds and whose roots attempt to drink up all the water underground. Its thick branches, slanting and twisted, seemed to form corridors, mountain ranges, ravines and roads, emitting light waves and sound waves of life which reverberated in the soul of this friend of mine for a long, long time. He felt that his life was illuminated, melted and conquered by a stronger life that held him in thrall and eliminated the insignificance, meanness, despondency and dejection within him. Standing under the tree in the fresh air, he felt that his soul was lifted and that he seemed to be transformed into a fluttering butterfly that danced happily in a green world permeated with life.
