刘夏:点睛

这是一个带有类型学意味的画展,画家刘夏有意识的抽取了自己绘画中关涉眼睛的一组画作,从一个局部出发,重组了他作为职业画家以来的绘画实践。眼睛,在人类的绘画传统中,一直被视为精神与灵魂的“窗口”,而受到画家们的格外关注,但在刘夏这里,对于眼部的描绘,更接近于一种后历史语境中的语言想象,他不仅逾越了绘画传统中的体裁分类,也同时跨越了绘画的不同历史风格。

在早期的临摹梵高自画像的画作中,梵高的“眼睛”被转换为两堆物质性的颜料,刘夏幽默的提示了梵高绘画给予我们的一种视觉质感。

而在刘夏近期的绘画实践中,眼睛又与面具(头罩)联系在一起,比如在他描绘的3K党与恐怖分子的形象中,眼睛被处理为一种没有空间深度的平面圆点,一方面原本象征着意识形态的神圣包裹被降格为一种空洞化的滑稽场景,另一方面这种形式处理,也强化了画面中的白袍人物形象的边缘形状。

后者的这种语言研究,更为集中的展现在他对于黑人形象的描绘之中,相较于西方油画传统中的黑人形象,刘夏显然是从平面性的角度实验语言的可行性,在此,眼睛成为刘夏塑造暗部体积感的某种路径。正如展览主题“点睛”所示,观众通过与不同“眼睛”的对视,既可以发现刘夏作为画家点化图像活力的修辞能力,同时刘夏的绘画实践也得以显得更为立体与清晰。

LIU XIA: Eye-dotting

This is an exhibition of typology. Beginningwith a particular part of human body, artist Liu Xia consciously draws a seriesof paintings involved with eyes to reconstruct his practice as a professionalpainter. Eyes, in the painting traditions of human beings, have always beenregarded as the “window” of spirit and soul, and have caught special attentionfrom artists. However, for Liu Xia, the depiction of eyes is closer tolinguistic imagination in the post-historical context. Not only does heoverstep the genre category of the traditional painting, but also goes beyondvarious styles in the history of painting. In his early imitation of Vincentvan Gogh’s self-portrait, the eyes were transferred into two piles of material pigments.Liu Xia humorously reminds us of the visual texture in van Gogh’s artworks. Inhis recent pictorial practice, eyes are connected with mask (or head cap). Forexample, in his portrayal of the KKK party members and terrorists, eyes areflat circular points with no spatial depth. This simple treatment, on one hand,degrades the holy wrap, originally a symbol of ideology, into an empty and ridiculousscene; on the other hand, reinforces the margin shapes of the figure in whiterobe. He presents this linguistic exploration more intensively in his depictionof Black people. Compared with the images of Blacks in western oil paintings,obviously, Liu Xia experiments the possibility of formal language with respectto flatness. Eyes have become an approach for the artist to create the volumeof darkness. Just as the subject ”Eye-dotting” indicates, the viewers can lookat different “eyes” and have eye contact with them, which allows them toexplore the rhetoric capability of the artist to activate the images;meanwhile, enables the artistic practice of Liu Xia to be more concrete andvivid.

做這件作品的時候我想到了亞洲尤其是中國,過去二十年的經濟起飛使亞洲獲得的前所未有的關注。當所有人都開始相信下一波終於輪到亞洲的時代,而西方世界也陷入了即將失去主導權的恐慌時,我開始反思是否未來真那麼理所當然與美好!

朱骏腾

1982年出生於台北

2010年畢業於英國金匠大學(Goldsmiths, University of London)藝術創作碩士班。大學時主修電影,並執導多部實驗短片,靈感取自於川端康成同名小說的畢業作品『睡美人』,入選28th 客萊蒙費宏國際短片影展、19th新加坡影展等國際影展。大學畢業後專心於藝術創作,作品已於2014台北雙年展、格拉斯哥當代藝術中心、德國埃森當代美術館、以色列荷茲利亞當代藝術中心…等群展中展出。

2013年創立空場創作聚落,擔任空間負責人與營運總監至今
