“ Man Ta bought her jade-colored shoes at a store on Stockton Street. “I liked them so much I bought 10 pairs,” she said. “ I wear them until they break.” She’s been in Chinatown for the past 19 years, long enough to see that shoe store on Stockton come and go.

Before he moved to the U.S. in 1983, he was an accountant and abacus master in Macau. He also considers himself a poet and calligrapher. Most of his clothes are from Hong Kong or Macau and has owned them for a very long time.

We approached Yok Lan Chung, a 90-year-old Chinatown resident outside a grocery store on Stockton Street. She was a bit taken aback at first by the three of us, a gaggle of girls complimenting her on her tweed coat and layers of silk: a jade blouse with a purple paisley shirt underneath and a black-and-gold paisley scarf around her neck.We loved the silk on silk on silk.
She was picking out grapes while wearing a grape-colored jacket that she’s had for 21 years. “Fit is more important than color,” she said when we inquired about jacket. “Old people don’t care about color.”……“I just threw this on,” they’d say. But it’s so clever, so creative, that it can’t just be a happy accident.

When we met Mr. Lee, he was window shopping at a shoe store on Grant Street. We were first drawn to his sweet old school Niners beanie and monochrome patterns. As we were talking, we noticed his furry vest was fastened with a row of safety pins and spotted sparkly bling around his neck and wrists (though he declined to give us a closer look). What a great mix of eclectic accessories.

We saw them at Portsmouth Square and frantically made a beeline for them, both in a brown, earthy palette with matching cheetah sweaters and furry hats. The gentleman didn’t want to pose for us or reveal his name, but thanks to her persistence, Kat, our translator, was able to banter with the couple long enough for them to agree to a portrait. And yes, they did match on purpose.
