An Interview with WL

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

April.s

May 24th, 2016 was the BIBS “Step Up Day” where its Shunyi Campus welcomed six-graders from its UES Campus to experience, in advance and for better future immersion, one day of seventh grader’ s life on campus.

Wearing a green short-sleeved BIBS Polo Shirt and pretty cool dark and curly (sort of) hair, “WL” was one of these 100 UES six-graders.  Below is the record of the interview held by April Shao, the BIBS campus reporter (referred to the “AS” hereafter) to “WL” about how he feels about the Step Up Day.
April.s

How do you feel about the Step Up Day so far?

It’s good.  It’s interesting to get a feel of the seventh-grade’s school life.

WL
April.s

Have you made your decision about the middle school?

Yes, I did.  It is still BIBS (the Shunyi Campus.)

WL
April.s

Why BIBS, for the past six years and also for the future studies?

I have been studying at BIBS (UES Campus) since grade one.  So I have a pretty good understanding about the pedagogical methods and educational system of BIBS.  It is my belief that BIBS would allow me to gain more.  But what truly attracted me are the architecture of the Shunyi Campus and its overall management in the areas like security and hygiene.

WL
April.s

Well, it sounds like you do know something about BIBS.  Have you ever visited Shunyi Campus before?

No, it’s been my very first time.

WL
April.s

Your very first time? But how did you manage to learn all about the Shunyi Campus if this is your first time here?

(Madame,) the Internet!  You can always find answers to your questions by divergent thinking (Editor’s note: a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions) and surfing online. So I had done my homework and had a fairly good knowledge about the campus before I came.

WL
April.s

You made a special note about the architecture of the Shunyi Campus.  Do you have any particular interest in that aspect?

Yes, my dream is to become an architect.  So I pay close attention to subjects like math, physics, design and arts in particular.  I will continue to focus on my interests in my future middle school years.

WL
April.s

You seem to speak in a very independent-thinking and mature way.  I am curious now.  What’s your family like?  Do you behave equally calmly and maturely when you communicate with your parents at home?

Well, I have to play the fool, a little bit, in front of my parents.  I don’t want them to know that I already knew this much.  I am a little afraid of talking to my mum.  She is eager to challenge and refute me no matter what I say.  My mind goes completely blank when that happens.

WL
April.s

Are your fellow classmates as independent-thinking as you are or you are a rare case?

People of my generation are more or less similar.  It is like the generation of my parents is similar in their own way.  My parents had a less comfortable childhood.  They managed to provide me a better life and education.  I really thank them for doing all that for me!

WL
April.s

May I ask how old you are?

I’m 12.

WL
April.s

A more private question, if you don’ mind, how do you see boys and girls            of your age falling in love?

Most of us would agree that right now is not a good time for that kind of love.  Study is really important and competition presses us.  I want no distraction for the moment.  But we privately would chat aboutthat.  You have to know something about it otherwise it would be difficult to build a conversation.

WL
April.s

If you were the school reporter today, how would you write the article about Step Up Day?

Well, as a school reporter, I would make a good introduction of the Shunyi Campus so that more people would know our school.  I really think it’s a GOOD school and hope more and more talented kids would join us.  Isn’t your job to publicize the school and attract more students and then more students would bring more fund into the school (and therefore making it an even better one)?

WL
April.s

Thank you so much for the chat!  It’s been a huge fun!  What’s your name, by the way?

Call me “WL”.  It’s my pen name.  My real name is “XX (Editor’s note: name double-xed to protect the student’s privacy and to avoid any potential spanks from WL’s mum)”.

WL
April.s

Wow, you even have a pen name!  Do you write in a serious way?

No, I don’t, actually.  But we are living in a complicated society.  How could we give away our personal information, like our names, cell phone numbers and ID card details, easily and without caution to other people?   We should know how to protect ourselves.

WL
April.s

A very good point!  Thank you so much!  We at the BIBS Shunyi Campus are excited to have you join us!  Take care and good-bye!

Thank you!  I should be around here pretty soon and I guess we will run into each other quite often in the future.  See you soon!

WL

A reporter’s special note to “WL”:

Dear “WL”,

I hope you don’t get mad about me for disclosing our conversation on the Step Up Day.  It was you who suggested that we should publicize BIBS more and better.   I strongly believe that your independent-thinking, self-confidence and wits as a BIBS-grown kid make an excellent BIBS student ambassador and therefore would be the best publicity for your school.

I believe your decision to continue to purse MYP studies in our Shunyi Campus after six years of PYP years at UES is itself a big endorsement statement about BIBS. Thank you today for providing me the fun, surprises and confidence in a new BIBS generation!  We look forward to welcoming you at the Shunyi Campus soon in the new semester!

Kind regards,

BIBS Campus Reporter
