The Legend of the Hungry Wolf Gang

Hello, dear members of the Beanstalk family!  My name is Hyein Nam.  I am currently a senior student studying at Peking University’s School of Economics in Beijing.  I am so honored and blessed to be able to study in one of the most prestigious universities in China.

I felt that Beanstalk, the very first school I attended when I moved to China years ago, and all my Beanstalk teachers and friends are of vital importance in assisting me in achieving my dreams and excellence today.
When I was in my fifth grade, our family moved to China from South Korea following my father’s work relocation.  At the beginning, it was a difficult period in my life when I was far away from my familiar environment and friends and hindered by language barriers.  My father, who had been working in China for quite some time made it clear that I should learn the Chinese language at all cost.  Based on good research and confidence, he chose Beanstalk International Bilingual School for me.  Years later it turned out to be a very wise decision made!

I always felt that my prayers during that difficult period were heard and the good friends and teachers at Beanstalk were sent to keep my company and to make me happy and confident again in a foreign land.

As I began my Beanstalk study, I must say that I had a poor mastery of both Chinese and English at first.  The language barrier was further complicated by my unwillingness to practice and fear to lose face in front of the whole class.  Enpan was a friendly Korean classmate who had a warm heart to help me out whenever I had language problems communicating with teachers and fellow students.  It was through the connection and friendship of Enpan that I became also good friends with Vivian Bi and Guanyi Cai.

In addition to good student friends, our Beanstalk teachers were all wonderful people who tried every effort to help me rebuild my confidence in language learning.  Ms. Lisa and Ms. Zori were, in particular, kind and helpful with my studies.  They became my good teacher mentors and we have maintained a close friendship ever since.
With all the help of my friends and teachers, I managed to learn English at ease during my Beanstalk years.  All my Beanstalk classmates who continued their studies in overseas destinations like the U.S. had absolutely no difficulties in adapting to foreign culture and languages.
Yet Chinese language study remained a challenge for me for quite some time at my early Beanstalk days.  I had a hard time in my high level Chinese language class.  But Ms. Lisa kept encouraging me and always remembered to acknowledge every single progress I made.  Her encouragement and support were the sunshine in my world and made my Chinese language learning a complete joy.

To assist us with Chinese language learning, Ms. Lisa grouped several students together including Enpan, Vivian, and me.  Led by Ms. Lisa, we tackled the barriers and difficulties in our Chinese language learning like a gang of hungry wolves.    Looking back, I attribute my Chinese language proficiency and academic excellence at Peking University to my happy learning days with Ms. Lisa and as head of the Hungry Wolf Gang at Beanstalk.
How time flies. The members of the Hungry Wolf Gang all grew up and we are now all undergraduate students in our dream universities and colleges.  Beanstalk has also grown over the years from a small school to a big education group.  I am so proud of what my alma mater has grown into and this further spurs us to aim higher for ourselves.  My dearest Beanstalk friends and teacher mentors, I love you all and thank you for your generous love, care and support. 사랑해요~  I would like to also take this opportunity in wish all members of the Beanstalk a very happy and prosperous Chinese lunar New Year!  May all your wishes come true!

We are deeply grateful for Ms. Lisa Li, Vice Principal of Beanstalk Dongrun Campus, for her connection and support in the making of this article
