I am LIN Jing

a junior student

of the faculty,

currently majoring in

Translation and Interpretation

It is more than obvious that we both start our college life with a clean academic slate, and then, along with a lot of independence and a myriad of critical decisions, we gradually step into our adulthood.

The decisions we make and the actions we take during our freshman year are going to have a major impact on the rest of our college experience. For many of you, college is the first time you’ve lived independently and basically out of the reach of your seemingly “annoying” parents .

You will, undoubtedly, enjoy more freedom on campus than ever before, only at a price . From the very moment you step across the gate of the campus, you must start to learn how to manage your study and your life well .

——毫无疑问，你们将有更多的自由空间，但这需要付出较高的代价。因此，从你们踏进大学之门的那一刻起，你们就必须学着管理好自己的学习与生活。

Here are some simple ways to start

To begin with

Go to class

坚持上课

Sleeping in and skipping that 8:30 am class will be quite tempting at times.

Avoid the temptation and fight against your inertia.

——拒绝诱惑，战胜惰性！

Besides learning the material by attending classes, you’ll also receive important information from the teachers about what to expect on tests, changes in due dates, etc.

——时刻跟着老师走，你收获的除了课堂上的知识，还有很多很多重要的信息。

Strive for

Good grades

争取高绩点

While good grades might have come naturally to you in high school, you must toil to earn them in college.

You can begin by setting some goals for yourself，then making sure you work as hard as you can to achieve them.

——你可以从给自己确立一些目标开始（或短期或长期），然后努力尽自己所能去实现这些目标。

On campus, you will be given relatively more time to explore things that genuinely interest you and perhaps to achieve all-round development.

So try not to rest idly all day long, watching the time slip away and doing nothing memorable.

You are now in full charge of your life and can’t never be too careful about every step you take. Moreover, don’t think about placing the blame on others for your mistakes; own up to them and move on.

Adjusting to your brand new college life can be rather difficult for you who just transit from high school and there are for sure bumps along the way (especially for the first few weeks).

But with more discretion and self-discipline, I can assure you that you will survive and thrive eventually.

At the very last, I would like to end this letter by quotingMahatma Gandhi, “The future depends on what you do today.”
