作者Ella Wheeler Wilcox（1850-1919）是美国著名作家和诗人，她的诗歌清新自然、韵律精美，很多诗歌广为流传；她的13首作品被选入 《最受喜爱的美国诗歌选集》。

本诗的首句“Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone”广为流传。这首诗里的对人生的看法，看似豁达开朗，却又有种极其无奈的伤感。
