If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

诗歌简介

这首诗歌就是麦格兰岛在《最牛英文书单NO. 22》发过的《丛林之书(The Jungle Book)》的作者鲁德亚德·吉卜林（Rudyard Kipling，1865-1936），一位出生在印度的英国作家。他于1907年获得诺贝尔文学奖时年仅42岁，是英国第一位获此奖的作家，也是至今诺贝尔文学奖最年轻的获得者。他还曾被授予英国爵士头衔，但他拒绝接受。

这是吉卜林在儿子12岁时写给他的诗。人生路漫漫，有顺境，有时逆境，还有一些难以名状的境遇。诗里写种种“如果”是每一个人都会面临的人生问题，字字句句都透着“天将降大任于斯人也，必先苦其心志，劳其筋骨”。

面对这些“如果”时，我们应该如何表现呢？如何从容应对人生种种挑战，成为一个坚强坚定的人，是这首诗表达的内容。
