Each year, many art institutions and museums around the world introduce a variety of Artist in Residence programs, offering artists opportunities to leave their studio and conduct research and production in other art spaces, museums or even outdoors. In addition to providing the artist with the support of space, funds and a platform for engagement, Artist in Residence programs also help artists to seek new inspiration and find a new way to work.

Artist in Residence programs are not confined to one form: art institutions invite the artists and provide financial support, or provide creative support based on their work or project. The length of time can vary.

Most famous Artist in Residence programs are based at art galleries or museums, but there are also some unique programs which allow artists to work in a space that differs greatly from a traditional studio, such as the Artist in Residence at the Outlandia Tree House, the Container Artist in Residence, the Artist in Residence at Brisbane Airport, the Artist in Residence at Antarctica supported by the National Science Foundation. Artists going abroad are likely to experience different ways of life, creating unusual work that they might not conceive of in their previous environments. Also, artists can establish a primitive and direct connection with the natural world. Meanwhile, as the public are increasingly aware of these projects, people will pay more attention to those places, occupations, or groups of people they are not previously familiar with.

M WOODS is an independent, not-for-profit art museum focuses on international contemporary art. In addition to the exhibition program, M WOODS hosts artist residences and educational activities which seek to promote the appreciation of the art of our time. Through establishing the residency program, M WOODS offers a platform for emerging artists to experiment with new working methods, and for audiences to discover new artists.

The Artist in Residence studio is located on the third floor, directly connecting to the Long Gallery. The location of the studio allows artists to surround themselves with the works in the museum, and have more exposure to audiences who visit M WOODS. The Artist in Residence is consistently engaged in dialogue with program staff at the museum and participates in M WOODS projects and activities when relevant.

This weekend (April 8-9) M WOODS will open the studio of the current resident artist Gong Bin. Visitors can learn in depth about M WOODS, the current and past artists in residence, artists’ working conditions and their methods of production, without making areservation. This is the first time that M WOODS has opened the resident artist’s studio to the public.
