家长和学生要了解美国高中是否适合自己,除了实地参观访问,最好认真阅读学校网站的每一个页面。我们翻译综合了几所寄宿高中的学生手册,帮助家长和学生全面了解美国高中。

【西学东渐】只推荐家长考虑寄宿学校,如果家长不去陪读的话,也就是:学生住在学校的学生宿舍(不是寄宿家庭模式),一日三餐吃在学校食堂的模式。

单纯从各种硬件设施看,优秀的私立走读学校、优秀的公立学校,与私立寄宿学校差距不大,但考虑到人均就差距很大了。更由于受校车时间限制,或者寄宿家庭接送条件限制,绝大部分走读学校的学生很少参加学校的各种课外活动,这样即便最好升入了理想的大学,我们也认为高中生活不完美,家长的花费不值得。

This handbook will help answer most of your questions about the expectations that will help us work and learn together in our outstanding community.

While we care about your performance in school and wish many types of future successfor each of you, we care more deeply about the kind of person you become. In these upper school years, each of you will cement the patterns that will define your character for your entire life and play an important role in your successin finding joy, having strong relationships, and working effectively withothers. I personally expect each of you to care enough about who you are becoming to reach for your highest self even beyond these community expectations. And where no rule exists, be guided by simplicity of life,directness of purpose and self-reliance. It is in your engagement of these fundamental principles that you will build your lifelong character andidentity.

South Kent faculty and staff are available to help you and your son with a variety ofquestions and concerns. Students are encouraged to address most of their ownquestions and concerns by talking to a teacher or their advisor. We encourage students to develop self-advocacy skills as part of the South Kent program. Weask parents to use the same channels of communication and speak first to the person most directly involved with the program, situation, or issue.

If your issue is not satisfactorily resolved at the teacher level, then please contact your student’s advisor for assistance. Advisors serve as student advocates and give wise guidance on a variety of topics.

South Kent uses a rotating class schedule, Monday through Saturday. Students must respect the Academic Day, which begins with the Morning Meeting and ends afterthe last class period of the day.

SouthKent students are expected to report to all classes on-time and prepared. Unexcused absences from class and excessive tardiness will negatively impact astudent’s grade.

Student absences from class or campus activities must be approved by the Dean of Student Affairs. All other absences shall be considered unexcused.

College Visits

Students are encouraged to visit college campuses as part of their college decision-making process. Students, when in residence at the School, should arrange college visits through South Kent’s Director of College Counseling.

SouthKent’s College Counseling office assists 6th Form and PG students with theirapplications to college.

Diploma Requirements

毕业要求

In order to qualify for a South Kent School diploma, a studentmust earn a minimum of 18 credits. One credit is awarded for successfulcompletion of each year-long class. One-third credit is awarded for successfulcompletion of a one-term course. The following are the minimum requirements for graduation:

【西學東漸】解读:最低毕业要求,和公立高中类似,如果学生学有余力且对自己要求高,可以看看学校能提供哪些自己感兴趣的课程。实际上很多美高学生会在校内选修AP课程,或者是某些一流认为AP课程还不够深入而提供的Advance课程。

All students must take achallenging course load each term. The Dean of Academic Affairs determineswhether a student will be required to take four, five or six courses per term.The Dean of Academic Affairs reserves the right to enroll a student in a courseif it is in the student’s best academic interest. Students are not allowed todrop full-year courses after the mid-winter marking period.

所有学生每个学期都必须修一门具有挑战性的课程。教务处的老师审核一个学生在一学期中是否需要修四门课程还是五门或者六门课。教务主任有权利决定最有利于学生学术成长的选课。任何一门的全年课程,在冬季中期之后不能放弃。

Terms, Marking Periods, and Cumulative Grading

There are three Terms each year: Fall, Winter,and Spring. Each Term is worth 1/3rd credits for each course. Each Term isdivided into two marking periods, and each marking period is worth 1/6th creditfor each course South Kent School computes grades cumulatively. Therefore, grades listed on report cards detail work for the entire year.

一年有三个学期:秋季度、冬季度、春季度。每一个学期每一门课程占1/3个绩点。每一个学期被分为两个阶段,每个阶段每一门课程占1/6个绩点。南肯特中学采用累计的方式计分。所以成绩卡上能看到学生全年的详细成绩。

Students on Academic Probation

学生因学业不良被留校察看的说明

Students who, at the end of any term ormarking period, have earned an F or two D grades will be placed on AcademicProbation. Students on academic probation will meet with the Dean of AcademicAffairs to devise a plan to improve their academic standing. Students on academic probation may be placed into the Academic Resource Center at theadvice of the Dean of Academic Affairs. Additional steps, such as removal fromafternoon activities, may be necessary to achieve academic goals.

学生在任何一个学期或阶段结束时,获得F或两个D,将被处以因学业不良被留校察看。因学业不良被留校察看的学生将与教务处的老师见面,制定改善学术状况的计划。这时学生可能会在教务处老师的建议下被送去学术资源中心。也可能会有其他措施,比如取消参加下午的课外活动来保证学习时间,以达到学术目标等等。

Student-athletes are expected to follow the 3A’s in order of importance: Attitude, Academics, Athletics.  If the first two A’s are not a priority then the third A may not be a privilege.

学校期待体育特长生在学习态度、学术、体育三方面同时做好,第一位的是学习态度,第二位的是学术,第三位的是体育。如果前两者没有做好,体育不会成为体育特长生的特权。

To that vain, any student-athlete that is failing a class or receiving two or more grades of D or below at any marking period will be ineligible for practices or games for one week.  During that time the student-athlete’s advisor, coach, teachers, form dean andacademic dean will determine a schedule of required extra help sessions toimprove that individual’s performance and grade.  At the end of one weekthe above group will determine if the student has made enough progress toreturn to athletics or shall continue in the same manner for another week.

任何一个体育特长生如果没有通过课程,或得到2个或2个以上的D或以下的学术等级,会被禁止一周的体育练习和游戏。在此期间,体育特长生的顾问、教练、老师,从院长到教务长将指定计划,以改善该生的表现和成绩为目标,为他提供额外的帮助。一周结束后,老师会评判是否该生取得了足够的进步,可以重新投入到体育练习中,还是下一周仍需要提高学术成绩。
