The island of Gulangyu is a six- or seven-minute ferry ride from downtown Xiamen, where BRICS leaders will be meeting from September 3-5. It may be a mere 700 meters across the sea – but really, it’s more like rewinding a century and disembarking into a daydream.

Today, it’s one of the hottest of tourist hotspots – and, as of July 8, 2017 – a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. The landmass of 1.78 square kilometers is home to around 200,000 people, but it attracts more than 10 million sightseers a year, making it one of the most-visited destinations in China.

Anyone in town for the BRICS summit could do a lot worse than follow in their footsteps. The little emerald speck on the map should be high up on every traveler’s bucket list. Nowhere else on Earth can you witness such a weird but wonderful marriage of East and West, most conspicuous in its remarkable panoply of building styles.

One of Gulangyu’s handful of monikers is the “Piano Islet”. It is said that there are more pianos per capita there than anywhere else in China, and it has nurtured some of the country’s most celebrated pianists. Nestled in a leafy outcrop of Shuzhuang Garden is Asia’s largest piano museum, parading over 100 uprights and grands collected from all around the world.

鼓浪屿的称号之一是“钢琴之岛”。据说，鼓浪屿的人均钢琴数量居全国之首。这里培育了中国诸多最著名的钢琴家。位于菽庄花园“听涛轩”是亚洲最大的钢琴博物馆，这里收藏了来自世界各地的100多部立式钢琴。

Follow the wafting aromas of barbequed squid and bubbling fruit-flavoured treacle down into the commercial area – a cluster of buzzing, boutique-lined streets all bafflingly named Dragon Head Road. Don’t try to resist the free samples galore of cured meats, spiced nuts and dried fruits – just leave some space for the local specialty at Longtou Fish Ball shop. For 10 yuan (1.5 US dollars), you get one soupy bowl of authentic, handmade orbs of ground fish meat. Yum.

Founded in 1921, the Haitian Tanggou Villa Complex is perhaps the crowning glory of “Amoy Deco” – the fusion architectural style that is exclusively Gulangyu’s. The entry fee includes a traditional glove puppet performance where young hand wizards will wow you with their mastery.
