Humans are designed to get the vitamins and minerals they need from the foods they eat. However, poor diets and food processing techniques can lead to vitamin depletion that can impact your health. Several vitamin supplements have been found by many to be helpful in optimizing health and ensuring that you are getting all the nutrients you need:

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is getting new scrutiny as its importance in cardiovascular health and blood glucose regulation has undergone more research. Some evidence indicates low levels of vitamin D are involved in a number of diseases, including obesity, cancer and dementia. If you want to optimize your health, making sure to get plenty of Vitamin D is a wise decision.

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is critical for normal function of blood and nerve cells in the body. A number of factors may cause insufficient amounts of vitamin B-12 in the diet or poor absorption of vitamin B-12. A deficiency of vitamin B-12 can cause anemia, severe fatigue, breathing problems, loss of appetite and poor cognitive function. If you eat a vegan diet, you may not be getting enough vitamin B-12. Individuals who have digestive conditions may not be able to absorb the nutrient properly.

Lutein

Not many people are familiar with the antioxidant lutein, an important nutrient for eye health. It is a carotenoid compound, related to vitamin A and beta-carotene. There have been studies done that indicate lutein is helpful in reducing the risk for cataracts and macular degeneration – eye diseases that are associated with aging. It has also been linked by some researchers to lower risk for heart disease and stroke. Lutein is provided by consumption of leafy, green vegetables, eggs, garden peas and Brussels sprouts. Lutein is often included in vitamin supplements for eye health.

Calcium

Health experts have known calcium is important for strong bones and teeth for many years, some claim that it is also critical in preventing the bone thinning that occurs with osteoporosis. Deficiencies of this important mineral have also been linked by some to cardiovascular disease, obesity, high blood pressure. Some researchers have claimed that many adults don’t consume the milk or yogurt that could provide sufficient calcium for their daily diets. In these cases, a supplement that contains calcium may be helpful in preventing many of these disease conditions.
