A Chinese villager has revealed his shock after the stray puppy he adopted off the streets turned out to be an endangered species of bear.

[copy]Wildlife authorities in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture confirmed the animal was an Asian black bear - a first-class state-protected species in China.

The unnamed farmer told the officials that he came across the little black ball of fur several weeks ago in south-west China's Yunnan Province.

[/copy]

The man claimed he mistook the bear for a Kunming wolfdog, an established breed in China, which was traditionally used by the military.

He said the animal looked weak and thin and that he adopted it so that he could give it food and raise it with his other dogs.

[copy]But as weeks went by the animal began to take on an unusual form and its appetite continued to grow at an alarming rate.

It was at this point the farmer contacted the local wildlife authorities, who immediately identified the animal as an Asian black bear, notable for a patch of white fur on its chest.

[/copy]

Officials believe the cub may have strayed from the nearby forests and become separated from its mother.

This bear is stated as being a first-class state-protected species in China but many of these Asiatic bears also known as Moon Bears languish in horrific conditions in Bile farms for many years or until their death..they are de clawed have their teeth smashed and are in cages that resemble coffins..their pain is immeasurable.. China do not ever state these animals are protected when day after day their blood flows through your hands..kat.

Repulsive people who believe an animal tastes better if it dies in agony, so they boil dogs alive.

How can some people imagine something so horrible. People with a dirty mind? Are Brits do it that way?

For all the terrible cruelty to both humans and animals in China. How beautiful to read and know there are good people who must feel the sadness most of us feel at cruelty. Well done to the farmer who rescued this orphan. I hope he has a lovely happy long life (the farmer) and I hope the bear never has a days cruelty from humans. Love and luck to all those in China who really do care. XXXXXXXX

An odd 60 million people in the UK think that a billion people in china all abuse animals... well looking at these comments, you might make that mistake..... the guy was a doughnut and thought it was a dog and took it in and cared for it... how does that become abusing it?

Hopefully the bear won't end on a bear bile farm - China have many.

So it was never a stray dog? Confusing headline. It would be simpler to say Chines villager adopted endangered bear thinking it was a stray dog....

They have laws that give protection to certain animals like Pandas but its open season on everything else, which is why you can boil a Dog alive on the street or beat it to death and the police cant touch you. Repulsive people.

Placing all Chinese into the same category is being a little blinkered to say the least. Ironic coming from a Scotsman, who complain about the very same thing.

Dogs, bears what's the difference really

Stupid people....same ones who eat dogs and abuse all kinds of animals. What was he planning to do with this poor creature? Hopefully it's going to have a better chance with the Wildlife Dept. But don't hold your breath.

The article does state that he had adopted it & was going to bring it up with his other dogs. Not all Chinese regions eat dogs anyway - that's more of a Korean thing. Some Chinese do mistreat animals, but not all by a long way.

That is one lucky bear. China rapacious greed for Ivory, rhino horn and tiger parts have wiped out the Rhino, with elephants and tigers on the edge, apart from that they actually believe that if an animal dies in agony it tastes better. How about the rest of the World applies the death penalty to the traffickers and buyers of the body parts of Rhino, Elephant and Tiger

This is very old news. Saw this article several years ago on Facebook!
