The Promise of the Past

Ink and Color on paper

Traditioncan be burdensome. When Chinese artists encounter the intense legacy oftraditional ink painting, to inherit or to reject it is not only an intimatepersonal choice, but also a grand collective proposition. In his iconic book, Beyond Representation: Chinese Painting andCalligraphy 8th-14th Century, Wen C. Fong pointed out that in Western arthistory classicism describes the Greco-Roman ideal; but in the history ofChinese art, no single period of antiquity represents a prescriptive classicalnorm. Today's artists are talking about learning from tradition and classicalart. Intellectuals in the late Ming-early Qing dynasties advocated the style ofepigraphic calligraphy made by anonymous craftsman in earlier times. Even theart critics in Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) worshipped the archaic aestheticscreated by previous artists. Therefore, the classical tradition of Chinese artis fluid and ever-changing. The art made by each generation could becomeclassical and traditional in the eyes of future artists. Hence every generationof artists is unique and critical, as they serve as a bridge that links thepast and the present. They carry the promise of the past and the inspiration ofthe future.

WANG JIE YIN 王劼音    b.1941

Far Away Mountain

Oil and Arcylic on Canvas

80cm x 60cm

Among the seven artists shown in the Promise of the Past, Jieyin Wang is the oldest. Althoughhis works presented here are made of acrylic paints on canvas, their essentialidea comes from ink painting. His expressive brush strokes evoke theExpressionist style. Saibang He exemplifies Minimalism aesthetics with ink andwater, creating a lofty space on Xuan paper. Yang Xia twisted paper strips intoropes and glued them on metal plate before painted on them. His slow andlabor-intense process added performative and conceptual elements to his finalwork. Beili Ding's sensitive yet unsophisticated personality and her stricttraditional Chinese painting education reconfirmed her choice of ink paintingas her artistic medium. Naturally, contrary to following the doctrine, she usesphotography to capture her objects, reduces tracing outlines of images, and applies"mogu manner" (an ink painting skill that emphasizes washes insteadof lines) in landscape subjects, successfully adapting traditional techniqueinto her own visual vocabulary. Both Feng Han and Jun Zhou adopt Gongbi (a careful realist technique inChinese painting) as their main technique. Han uses silk and Zhou uses ricepaper as foundation. From his Made inChina series a decade ago to most recent Blossom in Distant Lands, Han absorbs the finest techniques anddevelops his own in order to capture current social and cultural issues as wellas ubiquitous personal emotions.

ZHOU JUN 周隽    b.1982

Running as Usual

Ink on Paper

93cm x 175cm x 2

As the youngest artist among the group, JunZhou's meticulously executed works demonstrate diverse possibilities oftraditional materials and techniques in today's context. Yi Wu's work seems tobe ink painting on paper at first glance, but in fact they are etched copperprints that can be reproduced multiple times. Wu reinterprets folk art motifsin his work, seeking a simple and subtle quality, instead of the incidentaleffects that occur in traditional ink painting.

No matter the extentof artists’ awareness of self-expression or the artists’ pursuit forbrushstroke and ink skills, many concepts and techniques developed in thehistory of Chinese ink art are timeless. Such ideas are not much different fromWestern, or contemporary art. The Promiseof the Past juxtaposes artworks made in various media by artists ofdifferent generations, and showcases their achievements and contributions to inheritthe spirit and expand the boundary of classical Chinese ink painting. If ourefforts could be of some help to contemporary Chinese ink painting, ouroriginal goals are achieved.
