What Does the Bible Teach About Clapping: Clapping Hands to Scoff and to Scorn People

The second purpose I found in the Old Testament is, people clapped their hands to scoff and to scorn people who were fallen.

Lamentations 2:15 (NIV) All who pass your way clap their hands at you; they scoff and shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?”

To scoff or to hiss was the reaction displayed by the gentiles who passed by the ruins of a once great city or power. They saw the fallen condition of the Israelites and they were disgusted with the city of Jerusalem, which was once known as the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth.

The people who passed by clapped their hands to display their despicable feelings towards the ruin. They spoke to mock what happened to the Israelites and Jerusalem.

They weren’t praising or rejoicing. The clapping of hands were directed at the fallen state and the ruin of God’s people and Jerusalem. Again we see, clapping of hands were not given to God.

They clapped at seeing the destruction of the city and temple.

Below are more scriptures concerning this subject matter:

Nahum 3:18-19
 (NIV)

18 O king of Assyria, your shepherds slumber; your nobles lie down to rest. Your people are scattered on the mountains with no one to gather them.

19 Nothing can heal your wound; your injury is fatal. Everyone who hears the news about you claps his hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?

They clapped their hands at the fall of Nineveh.

Job 27:19-23 (NKJV)

19 The rich man will lie down, but not be gathered up; he open his eyes, and he is no more.

20 Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest steals him away in the night.

21 The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.

22 It hurls against him and does not spare; he flees desperately from its power.

23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

It seems it was an ancient method to clap the hands against and hiss a man from any public office, who had acted improperly in it (Adam Clarke’s Commentary).

Ezekiel 25:6
(NIV) For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,

“Because thou hast clapped thine hands,” exulting over the downfall of Jerusalem, “I (also) will stretch out mine hand upon thee,” to cause thy downfall (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary).

So clapping is about "approval" and "disapproval" in the Old Testament. It was directed towards man and not God. Then it is perfectly alright to clap to welcome and acknowledge someone before he speaks.

The
Oxford dictionary definition of “To Clap” is a verb and in the Oxford dictionary, it means “to applaud, to show approval.”

We applaud man or to show approval of man. To give God a clap offering or to clap our hands to God has not been found scriptural from the Bible. Therefore the church has been building a doctrine based on figure of speech from the Bible.
