西交利物浦大学教学创新大赛:参赛作品英国HND教学经历分享

 

这门课发生在2008年这个班级的学生最近突然打电话给我,邀请我参加他们的同学聚会(我是唯一被邀请的老师)他们告诉我,这门课是他们大学生生涯中最重要的一门课,他们很多年过去了,依然记得我这个老师,我不禁思考,这门课中究竟发生了什么?...



笔者侧记:这篇文章我写于2008年,最近在整理我近10年的教学工作的时候,我想简单介绍下这篇文章的背景是我在苏州大学HND英国项目,我教的学生是传媒专业的大二学生,这门课也是他们的一门主干课程《传媒研究方法》其他所有的老师都是歪果仁,只有我一个是中国的老师,这门课结束可大概有7年后,这个班级的班长突然给我打电话,邀请我参加他们的同学聚会(他们告诉我他们只邀请了我参加),他们告诉我这门课虽然已经结束了很多年,可是他们同学聚会时候,他们还会谈起来这门课,他们认为这门课是对他们来说大学期间最重要的一门课,因为这门课教会了他们如何学习?和如何研究一个问题?如何思考?我很受宠若惊,但是确实这门课一周两次,每次3个小时的课程,我和这些学生一起经历了非常宝贵的两年的时间。对我来说现在回想起来,在这门课中当时我使用可一个网站叫www.haokanbu.com (现在这个网站已经无法访问)这是当时这门课的一个特别有趣的地方,我的所有的作业和课件都是在这个网站上发布的,当时和学生大量的交流也是在这个网站上发生的。学生在这门课中最大的进步是他们对自己有了很多的思考,他们更多的认识了自己,认识了自己的专业,他们变得更加成熟,他们的反思能力得到了很多提高,这个和我自己对教育的设想是一致的。我希望我可以继续10年前教学的冲劲!

The first class I choose is

At the beginning of semester , I was tryingto get to know my students by asking them to individually write me a personalemail to introduce themselves and set up a system in my class , a lot of thingsin my class would be done on-line and off-line too , I told my students becauseof I have only met them twice per semester so that I hope we can use somevirtual ways to make the communication more easier .and in the classes I havebeen trying to use Workshop style of teaching style , for example in teachingthem how to form their own research question after a first couple of weeks ofteaching about what is research question and operational definition etc

I show them this on the slides :

Students need toclearly write these in the paper then discuss with their classmates then reportback to the classes about what they have found or even write down theircomments about each other’sresearchquestions, and at the end of this semester Ihave been doing almost the same activity but this time I think my students cansee the different and the improvement they have made during study from this semesterI took some pics about what they have written on other people ‘s researchquestion as the below : ,  

I was  asking them to write in Chinese , my studentsare excited to write for other people coz they want to get a good feedback fromtheir peer classmates . I think it is a good time for them to begin tosefl-check and doing some peer evaluation (which is emphasized in HNDassessment )

Another workshop like activity I used I amthink is when I was demonstrating them how to use the sampling techniques : in Qualitativeresearch in mass media ,you  know likepurpose sample and random  sample etc,and also focus group  I did the below :

•    Have students select a topic of interest to them in mass media  and conduct a focus group in the classroomusing other students from the class.

•    that moderating a focus group is not as easy as it may seem.

•    Give me what they have found from their focus group at the end ofdiscussions

In teaching how to use Content analysis class I asked my students to bring to class two local newspaper (they are allin Chinese ) , and bring to class and then work in group of no more than 4 ,then using the content analysis method to compare the differences and similaritiesof these two famous newspaper , which is very interesting for me as well , mystudents had a even debate with their group member I remember that Cons said hethink Newspaer A is more serious and he told us why he think so but Anotherstudents did not agree with him , so we had an interesting discussion but atthe end of discussion I told them I have already uploaded a Content Analysis research paper into our class website so that they can download it and read it when theycan to see what is the official Content analysis since it is still a veryimportant research method in Mass media .

Okay the second scene came to my mind isnot exactly a classroom activity but something my students doing outside of myclass , I always believe that students will learn much better when they areself-motivated and actually doing the things , so I suggested one of mystudents his name is Kevin , to give up the hope of doing a large scale surveyin his group project( RSS) and try to do a lecture for HND freshman students , cozI think the best way to learn something maybe is to teach someone , so theymade their own poster here and put it in front of the teaching building I wentto their presentation , it was far from perfect at all , so what ? they learneda lot from the presentation how to connect the audience how to convey their keyideas and how to answer the questions from the audiences ? those are the keyabilities they need to master when they are looking for the jobs in the futurejob market .

The last things Is the reflectionabout , after my first assignment which is the group project then it came tothe last month of the semester , my students had a lot of other assignments too, and I spent most of my class time helping each of them individually , it wasthe right thing to do , but I did not spend enough time to cover more things toteach them , but in that kinda situation I believe it was the best thing for meto do , coz my students seemed to run out of their energy and they reallyneeded a break , I want to give them time to work on their own , that is alsoother media teachers suggested me to do , but then I found out I should alsotry to “teach”my students something ,but this time is more alike teaching atneeds , which is to say to teach my students something they need rather thansomething I planned on my “fancy lesson plan “

For example last week I did thisin my class I told my students about 1 week ago we are going to learn how todesign a interview or survey in class but I needed them to look up in internetabout what are the “gender” differences between boys and girls , then when Iteach the class , I told them a “real story “happening in Shanghai , about amiddle school was doing a experiment on Senior 1 students they put the one sex students in one class like one class are all boys another are all girls andthen began to use the same teacher and same textbook , to compare the differencesif there is between the “single sex “classroom and “mixed sex classroom”( thisis a true story happening in 2004inShanghai) and then I asked my students to divide into 2 groups ,told them theywill be all the “experts “ who came to the school to investigate this thing inthat school , and one group need to come up with the “research methods “ butanother group need to come up with the “interview questions “ , coz it is theend of semester , students have already learned about all the “methods” in themiddle of my class , and now they need to work with their partners to discussabout what are research methods they need to use to apply and more importantlyif they are going to interview , who they are going to ask , and what questionsthey need to ask ?

The discussions went very well ,students have a lot of assumption I ASKED them to raise their hands for exampleI asked how many of you think that the boys will want to stay in the “singlesex “ classes , because most of my students are girls , so many of them thinkYes but actually it turned out to be they are wrong , about 83.4 percent ofboys want to stay in this real research .

Because of most of my students are trying to design a survey or questionnaire in their final media project , but accordingto their feedback they had difficulty on how to interview or how to design a questionnairefor their subject , and by doing this activities they learned it is veryimportant to come up with several questions which will fit on all the elementswill influences the result of survey , and also they need to use what they havelearned to fit into the specific situation they are facing , I believe that thestudents need to master the skills of “transferring” what they have learned toa new situation they are facing in their life or work situation .

Ok looking back I also learned alot of from what I am teaching ,especially from my students ,they have beenteaching me a lot too !!
