What is Yin Yoga?This question is asked alot by students who have been practicing yoga for a while but have never comeacross this particular challenging style.Simple answers such as "It is thebalancing practice for your yang style of yoga" or "It is yoga forthe joints, not the muscles" are not overly satisfying.If students haven'theard of Yin Yoga, they won't know what a yang style of yoga is.And isn't allyoga good for the whole body, including our joints?To really answer thequestion and get to know Yin Yoga requires a fuller explanation. This part ofour journey provides a deeper look into Yin Yoga and begins with an explanationof what it is, how it evolved, and its benefits for the whole body mind.

Yin Yoga has the samegoals and objectives as any other school of yoga; however, it directs thestimulation normally created in the asana portion of the practice deeper thanthe superficial or muscular tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues).YinYoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even thejoints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more activestyle of asana practice.

阴瑜伽就像任何其它瑜伽学校一样有着同样的目标和着眼点;然而,它在体式部分的练习中引起的刺激比以表皮或者肌肉组织(我们称为阳组织)来的更加深入。阴瑜伽的目标在结缔组织,如韧带,骨头,甚至通常在更积极的基础体式练习中练习不多的关节。



Suitable for almost alllevels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic andmuscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and thelengthening and contracting of our muscles.Yin Yoga generally targets theconnective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

阴瑜伽几乎适合所有水平的学生,它是一个对于强调内部热量,强调拉长和收缩肌肉并充满活力和力量(阳瑜伽)体系的完善补充。阴瑜伽一般目标在髋部,骨盆和脊柱底部的结缔组织。

While initially this styleof yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, yin practice can be quitechallenging due to the long duration of the poses.We can remain in the posturesanywhere from one to twenty minutes!Yin and yang tissues respond quitedifferently to being exercised.You need to experience this to really know whatYin Yoga is all about.After you have experienced it, even just once, you willrealize that you have been doing only half of the asana practice.

Please note: Yin Yoga is not restorative yoga.Like all yoga practices, if the tissues you are targeting for exercise are damaged in some way, please give yourself a chance to heal before resuming your regular practice.
