Online retailers yet to harness big social data

Twitter

Social data is being co-created by retailers, logistics service providers and end consumers as part of everyday business practice in the supply chain, with customers approaching retailers on Twitter at all stages of the e-retail logistics process.

This includes problems with online shopping carts, order processing delays, issues with tracking information, delivery delays, service provided by the relevant logistics/parcel shipping company, damaged packages/items, missing items and reverse logistics processes.

Parcel shipping companies are generally approached regarding tracking information availability, accuracy and clarity as well as delivery issues including delays, driver behaviour, missing/damaged packages, missed deliveries and pickup locations.

Supply chain partners also need to better coordinate their Twitter-based customer service strategies so they are able to jointly resolve issues for customers and provide them with a seamless experience. Big social data can be harnessed to identify a range of process improvement opportunities but retailers and their supply chain partners need to be ready for change.

A New Study

Key findings of the research study include:

DigitalTransformation of the Supply Chain is important

75%of respondents say Digital Transformation of the supply chain is “important”

50% say that Digital Transformation is “very important”

70% say they have started a formal Digital Supply Chain Transformation effort

Progresshas been slow so far

>30%of respondents said they are “dissatisfied” with progress so far

Only5% are “very satisfied”

Keytechnology enablers have been identified, but are not widely used yet

Supply Chain Visibility Platforms/Tools (94%), Big Data Analytics (90%), Simulation Tools (81%) and Cloud (80%) are seen as the biggest technology enablers of Digital Supply Chain Transformation

But 48% of respondents admit that right now “traditional” methods such as phone, fax, email are still the dominant ways to interact with supply chain partners

Dramaticchanges are expected within just five years

Today only 15% of respondents say that the majority of data from the extended supply chain is accessible to their organization. In five years, that number jumps to 54%

Today only 23% of respondents say that the majority of data from the extended supply chain is analyzed and used for decision making. In five years, that number jumps to 68%

Five years from now, 95% of respondents expect more processes with suppliers to be automated Five years from now, 94% expect to receive more real-time status updates from across the entire supply chain

Hope to transform transportation

As the Internet of Things expands, linking more and more devices worldwide, and e-commerce grows, APIs are being used to transmit vast amounts of data and laydown new networks. In a sense, APIs are becoming the neural network for amobile Internet of Things. Increasingly, companies such as Google and Visa are offering their APIs to software developers so they can embed functions in their mobile apps and create links to larger networks and services.Transportation may be slow to change — it took more than two decades in the early 1900s for businesses to shift from the horse wagon to wide spread use of the truck — but change is inevitable, and in the digital age it’s quicker than ever, making adoption cycles shorter.

“We believe that digital transformation has reached an inflection point,” Apigee CEO Chet Kapoor said at the release of the company’s report earlier this year. “The robust growth of API traffic in the enter prise suggests that this change is beginning.”

Manufactures must embrace Industy 4.0

Once the production plant is connected via the Internet of Things, this starts to deliver efficiency and optimisation across production, purchasing, quality control, marketing and engineering control. From here further integration and networking can begin.

The concepts of smart logistics, smart sales and marketing and smart services begin to emerge. This also extends to the supply chain, partner and distributor networks.

Industry 4.0 is more than just a vision of the future –  it’s a vision for now delivered at the speed of now. Using current technologies to connect physical objects to the virtual world is already yielding new business models, especially across discrete and process manufacturing entities, says Fenner.
